Recipe highlights
Salmon is one of the most delightful fish recipes around town!
Unique in colour, taste and texture, it is a truly beautiful fish that you can never have too much of.
Beautiful on its own, or with a few spruces of additional flavour, it works any night of the week and ticks the healthy meal post work on weeknights.
Learning how to cook salmon can result in hits and misses (as with all fish recipes).
However, mastering how to cook it in the Air Fryer is both enjoyable and rewarding.
Decadent enough to eat with minimal accompaniments on the plate, Teriyaki Salmon Air Fryer fillets will not disappoint!
Easy Teriyaki Salmon Air Fryer
This cooking method is very easy.
Using either fresh or frozen salmon (I am using defrosted salmon), it will take 15 mins - 20 mins (frozen) to cook.
Using a simple store bought teriyaki sauce, we add the fish for a minute or 2 to marinate and then simply let the Air Fryer work its magic.
You will find that you can purchase 2 styles of teriyaki sauce when you go on the hunt for it. One has a thick texture and works best for chicken legs, wings and ingredients with a long marinade time. The 2nd (recommended) has a soy sauce consistency. If you tip the bottle from side to side in the store, you will understand what I am saying and be able to find the right sauce.
Ingredients
The ingredients needed for the recipe are simple and can be found at the local shops.
I often have frozen salmon in my freezer, which is perfect to take out in the morning and cook in the evening.
As you can see, the recipe calls for:
- salmon (fresh, thawed or frozen will work)
- teriyaki sauce
- sesame seeds
- Basil Yogurt Sauce
I have a couple of homemade sauces on the blog that pair well with salmon. You might like the Cilantro Lime Yogurt Sauce, Parsley Yogurt Sauce or the Herbed Yogurt Sauce drizzled on top.
Instructions
Here are the step by step instructions to make the recipe.
- Add salmon to a baking dish (Photo 1)
- Pour in teriyaki sauce with salmon skin side up (Photo 2)
- Line basket with baking paper (Photo 3)
- Cook salmon, flip and remove paper, then cook a little more (Photo 4)
Fish is one of the few recipes that I recommend using baking paper for when Air Frying.
The reason being that fish skin is very soft and sensitive and can get stuck to the Air Fryer basket (even when sprayed 1st with oil).
For that reason when Air Frying fish, I line the basket (no spray necessary) and place the skin side of the fish onto that, when it is time to flip, I remove the baking paper as the cooked side of the fish will no longer be soft so won't stick.
The salmon will take on a lovely light golden brown colour from the teriyaki sauce, even with just a quick sit in the sauce before cooking and not a long marinade.

Expert tips
This is what I have learnt that will help you master the recipe from the 1st time and every following time:
- Skip spraying the basket with oil for this recipe and line it instead
- Start with skin side on the baking paper and remove paper when flipping the fish
- We cook for 7-8 mins, then flip, then cook for the same time again
- There are so many sizes and types of Air Fryers that some will cook faster or slower depending on the model, the 1st time you make the salmon, check the fillets along the way to see how they are cooking!

Teriyaki Salmon Air Fryer
Equipment
- Air Fryer
- Baking dish
- Silicon flexible turner
Ingredients
- 2 fillets salmon
- ¼ cup teriyaki sauce
- sesame sauce for garnish
- Basil Yogurt Sauce
Instructions
- Turn the Air Fryer on to 180°C/350 F for 15 mins (allow 5 mins to preheat if your model requires it)
- Add salmon fillets to a small baking dish, pour in teriyaki sauce and let it sit for a minute Note 2
- Cut 2 strips of baking paper and use them to line the AIr Fryer basket Note 3
- Place the marinated salmon fillets skin side up on the baking paper strips
- Cook the fish for 7 mins, then pull the Air Fryer basket towards you, rest on a heat proof surface, use a silicon flexible turner to 'flip' the fish, remove the baking paper and push the Air Fryer basket back into place. Cook for a further 7 mins.
- Serve immediately with Basil Yogurt Sauce and greens
Notes
- Note 1 I am using thawed salmon fillets for this recipe. You can use fresh, thawed or frozen. Cooking from frozen will take an additional 5 mins cook time.
- Note 2 It doesn't matter about the order here. Sometimes I put the sauce in, then put the salmon in and sometimes I pour it on top. What matters is that when it is marinating, the skin side is up (the sauce won't penetrate the skin) and that there is some sauce under the flesh of the fish, simply lift and place back down if you pour the sauce in after adding the salmon fillets.
- Note 3 Cutting the baking paper into strips, allows the absolute minimum amount of paper to be in the Air Fryer. The Air Fryer works by allowing air to flow around food including through the holes at the base, so we won't to block as little air flow as possible. The fish needs to be on the baking paper when the Air Fryer is on, otherwise it will flick up into the heating element and either burn or catch fire. (Don't worry, if it ever flies up, you will smell it quickly and can save the day).

Teriyaki salmon is one of my all time favorites and I'm so excited to see this air fryer version! I love the tips about frozen salmon, too, because I'm not usually prepared enough to get it thawed!
Adrianne says
No worries Jenn! Happy to hear that, yes frozen foods are so darn quick in the Air Fryer, I am not sure I will ever use the oven or microwave again, haha!
