Here are the step by step instructions to make the savoury mince meat pies. We start by browning the beef. You will need a large frying pan or sautรฉ pan to begin with.

- Then add the frozen vegetables (Photo 4)
๐ฉโ๐ณ How to Make Savoury Mince Pies
To make the savoury mince pies we start by sautรฉing the garlic, adding the beef mince and onion, seasoning it with salt and pepper and then browning it.
Next we add the Worcestershire sauce and crush the stock cubes over the top like you see in the photo above. Once done add the frozen vegetables, stir to combine and then allow to thaw and soften (around 2 minutes).
- Add the tomato puree (Photo 5)
- Then add the tomato paste (Photo 6)
- Add the Italian seasoning (Photo 7)
- Cut the pie bases (Photo 8)
Once the vegetables are cooked add the tomato puree, tomato pasta and Italian seasoning to the pan. Stir to gently combine and let these simmer for 5-10 minutes.
Next use a 9cm (โ inch) cookie cutter to cut the bases for the pies from the thawed shortcrust pastry.
- Push the pastry into the muffin tin (Photo 9)
- Then scoop in the meat filling (Photo 10)
- Cut the pie tops (Photo 11)
- Brush with egg and pierce a little hole (Photo 12)
Next push the cut circles of shortcrust pastry into the 2 x greased muffin tins so that they fill the base and sides.
Once done spoon the savoury mince into the pastry bases as shown in the photo above.
Now use a smaller 6.5cm (2.5 inch) cooker cutter to cut circles in the thawed puff pastry sheets. These will be the tops of the pies.
Once you have cut all of the pies tops work one at a time to place the puff pastry onto the filled pies and gently push down to seal the edges of the pastry.
Next crack the egg into a small bowl and discard the egg white. Add a splash of water to the egg yolk and whisk to combine.
Then take a pastry brush to brush the egg wash onto the top of each pie. When finished take a sharp knife and make a small cut in the puff pastry layer (this ensures that the heat can escape from the top of the pies and pastry flake up).
Now place the muffin tins into the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes (you can rotate the 2 trays around at the halfway mark).
When the pies are cooked (tops will be golden brown) you can use oven mitts to remove the muffin trays and place them onto a cooling tray.

When it comes to serving your mini beef pies you are going to want some sauce! Either tomato sauce or bbq sauce will pair nicely.
If serving for a party that is likely where it ends but if you want to make them into a meal then some cooked peas will pair nicely.

Let the pies cool then transfer them to an air tight container. They can be kept in the fridge for 2-3 days and need to be reheated before being consumed.

Or once the pies have cooled you can transfer them to a sealed container or ziplock bags and seal. Then place these in the freezer for up to 3 months.
How to Reheat
You can reheat the pies in the microwave however, the pastry won't be as flaky. Putting them into the air fryer or oven (moderate) will work. Ensure they are heated through before consuming.

Here are my sub ins and outs that you might be thinking about as you read the post and I will tell you if I think they will work or why they won't:
- If you don't want as many vegetables in the pies as I have used you can use use simply 'frozen peas' (equivalent amount).
- I don't recommend using shortcrust pastry for the top of the pies as it doesn't 'puff'.
- You can use pork mince, ground chicken or turkey mince for the mince filling if you prefer.
- Or if you want to use the filling to make one large savory mince pie you can do that. A 23 cm pie dish with shortcrust on the bottom and puff pastry on the top will do the trick.
๐ก Tasty Tips
Here are my top tips and tricks that I want to share with you so that you master the recipe from the get go:
- We do want to grease the muffins tins with cooking oil so that the pies will easily slide out once cooked and cooled.
- It is easiest to work one sheet of pastry at a time. Especially with the puff pastry so that it doesn't get too warm. You can keep the rest in the fridge until ready to use.
- I like to use an ice-cream scoop to fill the pies. A ยพ full scoop is enough filling per pie.
- When piercing the tops of the pies with a small slit before baking them we only want to make a quick, short cut. We are not trying to cut through to the bottom as this can cause a hole in the shortcrust pie base.
- The recipe makes 24 pies. If you want to halve it you will only need 4 sheets of shortcrust pastry and 2 of puff pastry. However, you will still have savoury mince left over. Serve on toast for lunch perhaps?

Savoury Mince Pies
Equipment
- 2 Muffin tins 12 cup capacity
Ingredients
Pie Filling
- 1 ยฝ tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon garlic minced or chopped
- 500 grams/16 oz beef mince
- ยผ teaspoon salt
- ยฝ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 medium onion peeled and diced
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 beef stock cubes
- 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables Note 1
- 400 grams/14 oz tomato puree
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon Italian herbs
Pastry
- 6 sheets shortcrust pastry
- 4 sheets puff pastry
Egg wash
- 1 large egg yolk free range
Instructions
- Beef mince: place a large frying pan onto the stove top, turn the heat to high and pour in the olive oil. Next add the garlic and saute for about 20 seconds. Then add the beef mince, salt, pepper and diced onion. Cook till browned using a wooden spoon to break up any clumps of meat as you go.
- Additions: once the mince has cook through pour in the Worcestershire sauce then crush the 2 stock cubes over the top of the saute pan. Next add the frozen vegetables, stir to combine and let these thaw and cook (around 2 minutes). Once the vegetables have softened add the tomato puree followed by the tomato paste, then sprinkle in the Italian herbs. Gently stir to combine and turn the temperature down to low. Let the mince simmer for 5-10 minutes stirring every now and then. Next turn the heat off, remove the pan from the stove and let the mince cool on a heatproof surface.
- Preheat the oven:ย preheat the ovenย to 180ยฐC / 350-375ยฐF / Gas Mark 4-5. (No need to do right at the start as it will be heating during the time you are cooking the mince).
- Muffin tins: use cooking spray to liberally grease 2 x 12 cup muffin tins. Then set aside.
- Pie bases: thaw the shortcrust pastry and then working one sheet at a time cut the pie bases using the cookie cutter. Repeat till you have enough pastry circles to fill each muffin hole. Working one circle at a time place the cut pastry on top of each muffin hole then push down gently to line the base and sides of the tin with the pastry rounds. Repeat for both tins.
- Pie filling: use an ice-cream scoop to fill each of the pie bases with the cooled savoury mince.
- Pie tops: working one sheet at a time use a 6.5cm (2.5 inch) cookie cutter to cut the puff pastry into circles for the pie tops. Place these cut rounds on top of the pie filling then gentle push them down and round your fingers around the outside to seal.
- Egg wash: crack the egg into small bowl discarding the egg white. Add a splash of water to the egg yolk and use a mini fork to whisk. Next use a basting brush to brush the top of each pie with the egg wash. Repeat till all pies are done.
- Pierce: next take a sharp knife and push down into the puff pastry top for each pie to make a very small incision. Repeat for each pie.
- Oven bake: place the 2 muffin tins into the oven and bake the pies for 20 - 25 minutes. Rotate the 2 trays at the halfway point. When they are cooked use oven mitts to remove the muffin tins and place them onto a heatproof surface. Let the pies sit in the muffin tin to cool. Once they have cooled slightly use a small teaspoon to push the edges and remove each pie from the muffin tin.
- To serve: serve the pies hot with your preference of tomato or bbq sauce. Add cooked peas to the plate for a dinner serving suggestions.

- Note 1 - Frozen vegetables: I like to use a combination of frozen peas, corn and carrot. This is easy as it comes like that in a bag in the freezer section. You can simply use frozen peas if you wish to.ย
