๐ค Recipe Highlights
I have summarised everything that you will come to know and love (LOVE โค) about the savoury beef mince and pasta recipe in the points below:
- Everyday ingredients: everything you need to make the recipe can be sought from your local grocery store. They are each simple ingredients that will be easy to get your hands on.
- Budget friendly: beef mince is one of the most economical cuts of meat around. That makes it a simple choice when choosing what to cook for dinner. This beef mince recipe doesn't cost a fortune but still delivers with maximum flavors and texture.
- Not bolognese: we use a different flavor profile to make this savoury mince pasta to a bolognese pasta. So it gives you another option if you like to switch the combination of flavors weekly as to not have too many 'same, same dishes'.
- Freezer friendly: if you are looking for a dish that you can make, freeze and pull out of the freezer on a night when you don't have as much time or don't want to start from scratch this savoury mince recipe is it! It freezers and reheats exceptionally well ๐๐.
๐ฅ Ingredients
The photo below is to show you everything you need to make the recipe. Please refer to the printable recipe card for specific ingredient measurements as well as detailed instructions.
As you can see the recipe calls for:
- Olive oil: to cook the beef mince.
- Salt and pepper: for seasoning.
- Garlic: chunky chopped (as seen in the photo), minced or 2-3 fresh garlic cloves can be used.
- French onion soup mix: you will find this in a small packet in the soup aisle of the supermarket. It is a dried powder with a ton of flavor!
- Tomato paste: thick and rich. It helps to thicken the savoury sauce.
- Worcestershire sauce: creates a little oomph in the flavor profile.
- Onion: we use 1 large onion, peeled and diced.
- Beef stock: beef stock, also known as beef broth. This helps us to add a very beefy flavor to the mince. I don't use beef stock cubes for this recipe like I do my Slow Cooker Savoury Mince but if you want to add 2 (crushed) you can.
- Frozen vegetables: I like to use a combination of frozen peas, corn and carrot. You can find this trio of vegetables in a bag in the freezer section of the supermarket.
- Macaroni: combines perfectly with the savoury mince to complete the dish.
- Beef mince: ground beef or minced beef is versatile and easy to make taste great! Beef mince is always handy to have in the fridge. It can be turned into millions of great ideas with minimal effort needed.
๐ณ Instructions
Here are the step by step instructions to make the savoury mince recipe. We start by browning the beef mince. You will need a large sautรฉ pan or skillet to begin.
- Brown the beef mince (Photo 1)
- Add the French onion soup mix (Photo2)
- Next add the tomato paste (Photo 3)
- Add the Worcestershire sauce (Photo 4)
๐ฉโ๐ณ How to Make Savoury Mince Pasta
To make the savoury mince pasta we start by cooking the beef mince. To do this place a large sautรฉ pan on the stove, turn the heat to medium-high and add the olive oil. Next add the garlic, let it cook for a minute and then add the beef mince, salt and pepper. Sprinkle in the diced onion and then cook the meat. Use a wooden spoon to break up clumps of the meat as you go.
Once the beef is browned add the French onion soup mix, tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce.
- Pour in the beef stock (Photo 5)
- Stir to combine (Photo 6)
- Add the frozen vegetables (Photo 7)
- Cook the pasta (Photo 8)
Stir to combine so that the mince has a thick gravy like texture.
Next add the frozen vegetables to the mince mixture and let them cook for 1-2 minutes ensuring that they are heated through.
๐ง Savoury Mince With French Onion Soup
Once the mince and veggies have been combined read and follow the packet instructions to cook the pasta. Do so in a large pot of boiling salted water.
When the macaroni is cooked but a little bit chewy (al dente) use a colander over the sink to drain it and discard the pasta water.
Next add the cooked drained pasta to the savoury mince like you see me doing it the photo below.
- Add the cooked pasta (Photo 9)
Then once the pasta has been added use a wooden spoon to stir and gently combine. We also want to use this time to allow the mince to heat through again (especially if you have used the same element to cook both the pasta and the mince).
- Toss to combine (Photo 10)
Once the dish is combined I like to garnish it with a little bit of parmesan cheese, black pepper and parsley. You can see how this unfolds in the video towards the end of the cooking.
๐ฝ Serving Suggestions
This is a hearty cheesy mince pasta! It is satisfying to be a complete meal but you can also add a little bit of balance.
For a bread side try the Tortilla Garlic Bread, Garlic Ciabatta, Garlic Pizza Bread or the Turkish Garlic Bread.
For salads try the Cherry Tomato Caprese Salad, Healthy Panzanella Salad or the Fresh Herb Salad.
๐ How to Guide
How to Store
Once the dish has cooled you can transfer leftovers into a sealed airtight container. These can be placed in the fridge for 2-3 days and need to be reheated before being consumed.
How to Freeze
Or portion the savoury mince into sealed air tight containers and stack them in the freezer. Frozen portions of the pasta can be kept for 3 months.
How to Reheat
To reheat refrigerated savoury mince transfer to a bowl and cover with cling wrap. Use the microwave and high heat to warm through which will take 2-3 minutes.
For frozen portions of the dish these are best fully thawed then follow the step above to reheat them. I find as these are always colder than fridge leftovers they need an extra minute or so to warm them through.
๐ Substitutions and Variations
Here are my sub ins and outs that you might be thinking about as you read the post and I will tell you if I think they will work or why they won't:
- Dried herbs: you can add a teaspoon of dried Italian herbs or oregano if you wish to.
- Tomato flavor: if you want more of a tomato base flavor in the mince you can switch out the liquid beef stock and switch in a can of tomato puree or tin of tomatoes (diced or crushed).
- Less carbs: mince and macaroni gives us protein and carbs. You can however, reduce the amount of pasta used if you want more protein than carbs.
- Different carbs: or if you want to make savoury mince on toast or savoury mince with rice you can do that. Follow the recipe until the mince is cooked and then either add cooked white or brown rice or pile it on top of some freshly cooked toast or crusty bread.
- More vegetables: for extra vegetables or different ones to the carrot, corn and peas you can try chopped zucchini, capsicum or green beans.
- Heat: if you want to add a hotter flavor to the mince you can add a few drops of tabasco sauce, a teaspoon of dried chilli flakes or a tablespoon or sriracha sauce.
- Pasta: much like in the Mince Pasta Bake I like to use macaroni for this recipe. Some other types of pasta that will work well are penne, fusilli, spaghetti or linguine. Or you can use your favorite type of pasta.
- Pasta bake: If you want to turn this into a savoury mince pasta bake you can. Simply follow the recipe up to the point where you combine the cooked pasta with the savoury mince. Then grease a large baking dish, transfer the cooked mince and pasta into the dish, top with a layer of cheese and bake. As everything at this point is 'cooked' all we would be doing is melting the cheese and that will take 10 to 15 minutes in a preheated oven.
๐ก Tasty Tips
Here are my top tips and tricks that I want to share with you so that you master the recipe from the get go:
- Cooking method: It will take 8-10 minutes to make the savoury mince. We want to cook the pasta once the mince is done so that we can simply combine them. If you cook the pasta before the mince it will stick together. We want to avoid this.
- French Onion Soup: Do you love French Onion packet mix or the combination of flavours? Then you might like the try the Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken, Slow Cooker French Onion Pork Chops or the French Onion Cob Loaf.
- Cooking with mince: Or is budget friendly mince your favorite to cook with? Then try the Thai Minced Pork, Linguine Bolognese, Fettuccine Bolognese, Mince Potato Bake or the Pork Mince Fried Rice.
- Heart meals in one: or do you like recipes where the whole dish is done and you see it as a complete meal? Try the Salmon Potato Salad or Tuna And Rice Casserole.
๐ค Frequently Asked Questions
Do I cook pasta or mince first?
Cook the mince to begin with and then the pasta. This way the drained cooked pasta can be added straight to the cooked mince. It won't stick together and will be easy to combine. If you cook the pasta first, it will start to stick together as it cools and then it will be in a big clump and break apart if you try and add it to the mince later.
Salt, pepper, onion, garlic, dried herbs and French onion soup mix are all good ways to add flavor to beef mince.
A frying pan, sautรฉ pan or skillet is the best way to cook mince. A saucepan works better for cooking pasta.
Mince can be cooked on medium-high heat.
Yes you can. The recipe can be made with pork mince, lamb mince, chicken or turkey mince.
