🤍 Recipe Highlights
I have summarised everything that you will come to know and love (LOVE ❤) about the recipe in the points below:
- Homemade: yes store bought garlic bread is fine, tasty and sometimes very good. But you can be at home, craving garlic bread, not wanting to head out or order in and only have tortillas in the fridge. Tortillas with cheese will tick the box (you know what I am saying 😂😉).
- Leftover tortillas: you may have a bag of leftover tortillas in the fridge and want to find other uses for them before they go stale and dry. This is the perfect recipe to use them for as the garlic bread can be served with just about anything!
- Simple ingredients: you might find that you have almost all of the ingredients needed to make the garlic tortilla bread. This makes it such a practical choice as you can simply raid your fridge and cupboard without having to head to the shops.
- Cost effective: this is a cheap recipe that won't set you back adding coins to the piggy bank. You can stay on track with your budget and enjoy take out style foods at the same time!
- Quick recipe: from start to finish you can have this baked tortilla with cheese sorted in less than 15 minutes. It can fulfill the craving when it hits but not have it take so long that you are over it but the time the recipe cooks.
🥗 Ingredients
The photo below is to show you everything you need to make the tortilla garlic bread recipe. Please refer to the printable recipe card for specific ingredient measurements as well as detailed instructions.
As you can see the recipe calls for:
- Butter: unsalted butter is best to use for the recipe. We use it and add the herbs and garlic to it that we form a paste with and spread over the tortillas.
- Garlic: I like to use chunky minced garlic for this recipe to make it super easy. (No chopping needed!)
- Basil: this is the 1st of the 3 dried herbs we use for the recipe. Dried herbs are convenient as you most likely already have them in the pantry and can grab them and use them as you like.
- Dried oregano: the 2nd of our dried herbs. Another popular and versatile flavour and texture that works across a number of recipes.
- Parsley: the parsley rounds out our 3 dried herbs. The combination has an Italian style about it so it is perfect to use for homemade garlic bread.
- Mozzarella: shredded mozzarella cheese melts well and has the ooey gooey cheese factor about it. Yet in saying so, its flavor is rather mild. So we pair it with another grated cheese and then can tick our taste and texture boxes with ease.
- Cheese: tasty cheese, cheddar cheese or your favorite cheese that grates well will work. You will get better results if you use a box grater or hand held greater and grate the cheese yourself.
Tasty Tip: I like to provide you with a number of substitutions and variations giving you an array of options when making the recipe. If in doubt of any of the above ingredients, or wanting alternatives, read this section (further below) before jumping into the instructions on how to make the recipe which are coming next 😉👌.
🍳 Instructions
Here are the step by step instructions to make the recipe. We start by making the garlic butter.
- Gather the ingredients to make the butter mixture (Photo 1)
- Add them to a small mixing bowl (Photo 2)
- Use a spoon to mix them together (Photo 3)
- Spread butter mixture on followed by 1st cheese (Photo 4)
👩🍳 How to Make Tortilla Garlic Bread
Start by making the herb butter mixture. To do so grab a small bowl and add the chopped butter, dried basil, dried oregano and dried parsley.
Then use a spoon to consistently combine this until it is a buttery paste.
Once combined dollop some onto the tortilla bread then use a butter knife to spread the garlic butter out into a layer.
Repeat for the 2nd tortilla.
Next sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the top of the 1st tortilla and then repeat with the 2nd one.
- Spread the 2nd type of cheese over the mozzarella (Photo 5)
- Option here to make a double layer (Photo 6)
- Simply stack one on top of the other (Photo 7)
- Oven bake the garlic bread (Photo 8)
Place the tortillas into the oven on the middle shelf and allow them to melt so that the base gets crispy and the cheese turns golden brown.
The single layer style will be ready around the 10 minute mark and can be removed with kitchen tongs onto a chopping board. The double layer style will need an extra 5 minutes to cook to ensure that both tortilla layers get cooked through.
- Slice the garlic bread into pieces (Photo 9)
Once the garlic bread is out of the oven, use a pizza wheel to slice it into pieces and get ready to devour your efforts!

Is it a garlic bread, yes, is it a cheese bread, uh-huh it is. Is it a garlic cheese bread that ticks all of the comfort food boxes, well how did you know, of course it is! 😂👌
👍 How to Guide
How to Store
Store leftover pieces of the garlic bread in a sealed, air tight container. They are best eaten within 2 days and heated 1st.
How to Reheat
Place leftover garlic bread on a plate with cling wrap and heat in the microwave to warm through.
Or for crispy garlic bread place garlic bread slices into the air fryer and heat for 1 to 2 minutes.
How to Freeze
In my opinion this is a dish best cooked and eaten or the leftovers reheated and eaten the next day.
The tortillas are quite thin and placing them in the freezer means they loose the cheesy goodness which we were seeking when we set out to make the recipe.
So, whilst you could if you really needed to freeze leftovers, you are best not too. Cheese and garlic good, cheese and garlic, frozen, thawed and reheated, not so good 😉👍.
😉 Substitutions and Variations
Here are my sub ins and outs that you might be thinking about as you read the post and I will tell you if I think they will work or why they won't:
- If you want to use fresh herbs you can. Either a combination or simply fresh parsley (finely chopped) will work.
- If you want to make this but use basil pesto as the spread layer and then keep the cheese on top, that will work.
💡 Tasty Tips
Here are my top tips and tricks that I want to share with you so that you master the recipe from the get go:
- The butter will be easiest to combine if it is at room temperature. So let it sit out of the fridge for a bit before starting as this will give it a chance to soften.
- If doing both a single layer garlic bread and a double layer at the same time, the double layer will take about an extra 5 minutes to cook (fyi 😉👍).
- For a super crispy base, remove the baking tray from under the tortillas, and place it on a lower down shelf so that the base will crispy up even further.
- When slicing the garlic bread, wait 1 minute after removing it from the oven. This allows the cheese to settle so that it won't slide off as you slice.
🤓 Frequently Asked Questions

You will find lebanese bread in the bread aisle of the supermarket.

Tortilla bread is used as a wrap for other foods. Try stuffing it with chicken tenders, lettuce and tomato or rice and beans with a dollop of Greek yogurt on top. They can also be cut into tortilla chops and oven baked or fried until crispy.
Is naan bread same as tortilla?
Naan bread and tortilla are different types of bread. Naan is soft with a double layer and closed outside edges. It is great for curries and Indian foods. Tortilla on the other hand comes in a variety of sizes, is good for wrapping foods in and is a single layer bread.

- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 3 medium tortillas
- ¼ cup cheese
- ¼ cup mozzarella cheese
Garnish (optional):

Instructions
- Preheat the oven: preheat the oven to 180°C / 350-375°F / Gas Mark 4-5.
- Garlic butter: add the chopped butter, garlic, dried basil, parsley and oregano to a small bowl. Then use a spoon to mix and consistently combine.
- Tortillas: next layer 2 tortillas side by side onto a chopping board. Dollop some of the 1st mixture into the bread then use a butter knife to gently spread it out into a flat layer. Then repeat for the 2nd layer.
- Cheese topping: sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the top of the garlic butter layer then sprinkle the 2nd cheese over the top.
- Double layer: next remove one of the tortillas and place it onto a baking mat. Then repeat this process to make another single tortilla with garlic butter and cheese mixture and then stack this on top of the remaining cheese topped tortilla.
- Oven bake: place the double layer tortilla garlic bread next to the single layer tortilla and then place them into the oven on the middle shelf. Allow the tortillas to bake for 10 minutes and then use a pair of tongs to remove the single tortilla and place it onto a chopping board. Allow the double layer tortilla to cook for a further 5 minutes. Then use the tongs to remove this one from the oven also.
- Serve: use a pizza wheel to slice the garlic bread into pieces, then top with fresh basil leaves and serve whilst warm.
