๐Ÿค Slow Cooker Devilled Sausages Recipe

I have summarised everything that you will come to know and love (LOVE โค) about the recipe in the points below:

    • Simple ingredients: each of the ingredients needed to make the recipe will be easy to get your hands on at the grocery store.
    • Family friendly: if you are wanting to find a dish that will suit all ages so you don't have to prepare multiple meals, this is it!
    • Freezer friendly: the sausages and sauce freeze and reheat very well. So the recipe is a great one to meal prep for busy nights when you won't have time to cook.

    • Barbecue sauce.
    • Apples: skin on, thinly sliced, core removed.
    • Beef stock.
    • Onions.
    • Pork Sausages.

๐Ÿซ™ How To Create A Thick Sauce

Then we also use 2 simple ingredients as seen below to thicken the sauce in the end stages of the cooking process.

Ingredients to make a slurry on marble background with text labels on top.
    • Water.
    • Corn flour.

    ๐Ÿ˜‰ Variations

Here are my sub ins and outs that you might be thinking about as you read the post and I will tell you if I think they will work or why they won't:

    • Sausages: you can use pork sausages, chipolatas, beef sausages or your favorite type of sausages.
    • Balsamic vinegar: or the equivalent amount of apple cider vinegar.
    • Tomatoes: crushed tomatoes or diced tomatoes. Use a plain tin ie with no extra herbs or 'Italian flavors'.
    • Apples: granny smith apples or a red apple like red delicious or pink lady.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ How to Make Slow Cooker Devilled Sausages

To make the recipe we take the optional step of browning the sausages with a little olive oil using a large frying pan.

Step by step instructions to make devilled sausages with text labels on top.

    ๐Ÿณ Instructions

    • Brown the sausages (Photo 1)
    • Add the sauce ingredients (Photo 2)
    • Then add the onions (Photo 3)
    • Add the sausages (Photo 4)

If browning the sausages place a large frying pan onto the stove top, add the olive oil and turn the heat to high. Then add the sausages and cook using tongs to rotate till the edges are browned.

Next liberally spray the slow cooker insert with cooking oil. Then we add the sauce ingredients.

To do this pour in the beef stock, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, garlic, mustard powder, paprika, salt and black pepper. Now gently stir to combine.

Next add the sliced onions to the slow cooker insert and then place the browned sausages on top. Put the lid on and set the timer and temperature to 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low.

Let the dish cook for 2 hours then remove the lid and add the apple pieces. Put it back on and let it cook for a further hour.

    Steps to make slow cooker devilled sausages with text labels on top.;
Step by step instructions 5 to 8
    • Cook then add the apples (Photo 5)
    • Stir to combine (Photo 6)
    • Make the slurry (Photo 7)
    • Pour in the slurry and cook (Photo 8)

Now make the slurry by combining the water with the corn flour. When there is 1 hour of cooking time remaining remove the lid again and pour the slurry into the slow cooker. Gently stir to combine and then put the lid back on. Now let the dish cook for a final hour. During this time the slurry will thicken the sauce.

Once the cook time is up, remove the lid again and give the dish a gentle stir.

    ๐Ÿฝ Serving Suggestions

When it comes to serving your devilled sausages, soft fluffy mashed potatoes are an easy choice!

I also like to pop some greens on the plate and garnish with fresh thyme leaves.

Some other potato sides to try are the Skin on Roast Potatoes, Duck Fat Roast Potatoes, Garlic Butter Potatoes or the Potato And Sweet Potato Bake.

For bread try the Tortilla Garlic Bread or Turkish Garlic Bread.

    ๐Ÿ‘ How to Guide

    How to Store

Portion leftovers in a sealed airtight container. Place these into the fridge and consume with in 3-4 days.

    How to Freeze

Once the dish has cooled you can portion leftovers into a sealed airtight container. These can be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months.

    How to Reheat

Transfer leftovers into a bowl and cover with cling wrap. Reheat on high using the microwave until warmed through (2-3 minutes).

For frozen portions of the dish allow these to fully thaw then reheat using the microwave step above. These will take an extra minute or so to heat through.

    ๐Ÿ’ก Tasty Tips

Here are my top tips and tricks that I want to share with you so that you master the recipe from the get go:

    • To brown or not to brown: I do brown the sausages for this recipe to lock in their flavor. I also don't pierce them at all. However, this step is optional. If you simply want to add them to your crockpot without browning them that will work also.
    • Spray oil: I do give the slow cooker insert a little spray with olive oil. This helps to ensure nothing sticks and the clean up process is easier.
    • Do you love slow cooking? Then you might like the Pulled Beef, Coke Ham, Slow Cooker Coke Ribs, Dry Rub Ribs, Slow Cooker Dahl or Slow Cooker Savoury Mince.
    • Or is it easy family meals you need? Then you might like the Tuna Enchiladas, Mini Enchiladas or Beef And Bean Enchiladas.
