๐Ÿค Slow Cooker Coke Ham Recipe

I have summarised everything that you will come to know and love (LOVE โค) about this juicy ham recipe in the points below:

    • Space saver: using the slow cooker to cook the Christmas ham means that you free up oven space for the turkey, pork, chicken or sides. It is a great way to allow you to use the kitchen for a multitude of recipes at a time of year where there are dishes everywhere!
    • Minimal prep time: we whisk together a glaze, add the ham to the slow cooker, pour the glaze over the top and then let it cook. This recipe offers one with a very minimal cook time necessary.
    • Set and forget: when it comes to Christmas everyone is busy, busy, busy. This recipe will let you prepare the family glazed ham at the same time as giving you back time to get other stuff done (Present wrapping perhaps!).
    • Versatile: this ham works just as well for Easter or special occasions as well as Christmas time. So if you are looking for a delicious ham recipe for big family dinners or when you want a week of easy leftovers then look no further and get your slow cooker ready!

๐Ÿฅ— Slow Cooker Coke Ham Ingredients

The photo below is to show you everything you need to make the crockpot ham recipe. Please refer to the printable recipe card for specific ingredient measurements as well as the full recipe instructions.

As you can see the recipe calls for:

    • Ground cloves: a little of these go a long way!
    • Worcestershire sauce.
    • Mustard.
    • Honey.
    • Coke: we want to use 'real coke' or traditional coca cola that is not sugar free. This is because the sweetness of the cola is part of what makes the ham taste so delicious.
    • Ham: we want to use a fully cooked ham. Both boneless and bone in ham will work.

    ๐Ÿ˜‰ Substitutions

Here are my sub ins and outs that you might be thinking about as you read the coca-cola ham post and I will tell you if I think they will work or why they won't:

    • Ham: you can use a spiral ham, gammon joint, holiday ham, a gypsy ham (shown in photos throughout the post), country ham, boneless ham or bone-in ham.
    • Alcohol: I avoid it for this recipe! I know it can be fun to add bourbon or rum to a ham glaze and it works well when using the oven. When slow cooking however, there is no where for the alcohol to go other than into the meat. So as tempting as it may be to add a splash of this or that, I would save that ingredient for when you are making a ham in the oven.
    • Honey: you can use the equivalent amount of maple syrup in place of the honey if you wish to.
    • Brown sugar: add a tablespoon to the glaze if you want.
    • Cloves: I don't like to use whole cloves for the recipe as I am using smoked meat and they are a little bit harder to push into the flesh than rind removed ham. If you are using a different type of ham, ie one with the soft white fat layer exposed then by all means use whole cloves and push them into the flesh as you see fit.
    • Mustard: you can use either Dijon mustard or wholegrain mustard (equivalent amount).
    • Worcestershire sauce: you can use soy sauce or balsamic vinegar in place of the Worcestershire sauce.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ How to Make Slow Cooker Coke Ham

To make the slow cooker coke ham we start by gathering the ingredients to make the glaze.

Instructions to make slow cooker coke ham with text labels 1 to 4
Step by step instructions 1 to 4
    • Gather the glaze ingredients (Photo 1)
    • Add to a bowl (Photo 2)
    • Stir to combine (Photo 3)
    • Place ham into the slow cooker (Photo 4)

    ๐Ÿณ Instructions

Add the honey, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and dried cloves to a small bowl and whisk to combine then set aside.

Place the ham into the bottom of the slow cooker and then pour the can of coke over the top.

Step by step instructions to make slow cooker ham with text labels.
Step by step instructions 5 to 8
    • Pour the coke over the top of the ham (Photo 5)
    • Drizzle over the glaze (Photo 6)
    • Cook, lid on (Photo 7)
    • Rest and then slice (Photo 8)

Next pour the glaze over the ham. It will flow over the sides but you can also use a basting brush to ensure it is fully coated.

From there it is a simple matter of putting the lid on and letting it cook.

We want to do this low and slow. Aim for 3 ยฝ - 4 hours cook time (low setting) and use a meat thermometer to ensure it is ready once the cook time is up.

The internal temperature of the ham needs to reach 60ยฐC (140ยฐF) to be fully warmed through and ready to dive into. If it is not quite there at the 3 ยฝ hours, pop the lid back on and test again at 4 hours.

The ham you see in the photos through the post achieved this temperature at the 4 hour mark. We also don't want to overdo it, so it is a good idea to check it towards the final stages of the cooking process to ensure that you are happy with it and it will be your Piรจce de rรฉsistance!

Once the ham is done, turn the temperature off on the slow cooker and transfer the glazed ham to a chopping board. We want to rest it for at least 10 to 15 minutes and then carve it into thin slices.

๐Ÿฝ What To Serve With Coca Cola Ham

When it comes to serving your slow cooker coke ham potatoes are an obvious pairing. From the Creamy Garlic Potatoes to the Potato And Onion Bake, Potato And Sweet Potato Bake or the Potato And Broccoli Bake.

For other types of potatoes try the Duck Fat Roast Potatoes, Garlic Butter Potatoes or the Potato And Cauliflower Bake.

For non potato sides try the Crumbed Mushrooms, Bacon Wrapped Asparagus or the Caramelised Fennel.

A sauce on the plate is essential too. From a basic mustard to something a little bit more fancy like a Chilli Tomato Jam or Tomato Bacon Jam.

If you want a bread side try the Slow Cooker Cheese And Bacon Bread.

Or keep things super easy like you see in the photo below with roast and steamed veggies, ham and mustard (it is almost too easy!).

    ๐Ÿ‘ How to Guide

    How to Store

Once the ham has rested and you can carved it, transfer the slices to a sealed, air-tight container. These need to be refrigerated and can be kept for 3-4 days. Or if you don't want to carve the whole ham, you can place leftovers into a ham bag and keep this in the fridge. If doing so the ham bag will ham so instructions on the front to advise how to keep the ham moist and save it from drying out.

    How to Freeze

The ham leftovers can also be frozen. A great way to do this is to dice them into small pieces and then place them into a zip lock bag. Push to remove the air and then seal. These leftovers can be kept in the freezer for 3 months.

    How to Reheat

If serving the ham on sandwiches it can be cold. Or you can do it as a Ham And Cheese Toastie in which case it will reheat as the toastie cooks. Otherwise the ham can be reheat in the pan if you are using it in pasta, a potato bake or cold for a salad.

    ๐Ÿ’ก Tasty Tips

Here are my top tips and tricks that I want to share with you so that you master this slow cooker ham recipe from the get go:

    • Sourcing the ham: for Easter and Christmas you will see an abundance of ham at your local grocery store. At other times during the year you may be able to get smaller portions but not a large cooked ham like you see in this post. In which case keep in mind the local butcher or delicatessen as they are more likely to have cooked smoked ham all year round.
    • Ham size: one of the most important things about this recipe is that the ham fits into your slow cooker. A little too big or too snug and you are snookered! So either take the slow cooker insert with you when shopping or have a really good idea about the size of the ham that will fit your slow cooker.
    • Glaze: you will find that as you pour the glaze over the ham it will naturally and organically flow over the meat. There won't be too much need at this point to baste the ham.
    • Double glaze: if you want to make a double batch of the glaze for the ham and baste every hour you can.
    • Rest: if you are not ready to serve the ham once cooked, you can leave it on a cutting board covered with aluminum foil and then carve when ready to eat.
    • Travel logistics: if you are in charge of the ham and have to travel to the family gathering location. Once cooked place it in a large roasting pan and cover with foil. Then drive to the location and slice it there. This is an option if it is just cooked and the time has come to hit the road.

๐Ÿค“ Slow Cooker Coke Ham FAQ's

Can you cook ham in coke in a slow cooker?

Yes, absolutely. Cooking ham in the slow cooker with coke is a great way to ensure that the ham stays juicy and moist.

Does ham need to be submerged in a slow cooker?

Ham needs to have some liquid in the base of the slow cooker to ensure that the cooking environment stays moist. That being said you only need about a cup of liquid and the ham does not need and shouldn't be fully submerged in liquid.

Do you leave plastic on ham in a slow cooker?

No. All plastic and packaging from the ham needs to be fully removed and discarded before putting the ham into the slow cooker.

    Notes

    • Note 1 - Ham: one of the most important things is choosing a ham that will fit into your slow cooker. It also needs to be pre cooked ham, which is smoked. You can use bone in or boneless ham. I like to go for a ham that is reasonably even in size across its length and breadth. This ensures even cooking. You can remove the rind and pour the glaze over the white layer of the meat depending on which type of ham you get.ย
    • Note 2 - Coke: we want to use regular coke. Not sugar free or diet coke. You can use Pepsi if you want to. But again, use the full sugar version.ย
    • Note 3 -Basting : If you want to baste during this time you can. Simply make a double batch of the glaze and use this every hour to baste the ham. The liquid in the base of the slow cooker ie coke and run off glaze is too thin to glaze with. So either reserve some or make the double batch. Or simply don't glaze during the cooking process. Each of these are possibly options.ย
