🥗 Ingredients
The photo below is to show you everything you need to make this savoury beef mince. Please refer to the printable recipe card for specific ingredient measurements as well as detailed instructions.
As you can see the slow cooker mince meat recipe calls for:
- Salt and pepper: we use salt and a little bit of black pepper for seasoning in the recipe.
- Garlic: you can use 2-3 fresh garlic cloves finely chopped, minced jarred garlic or chunky chopped garlic like you see in the photo above. Choose whichever option is the most convenient for you to use.
- Tomato paste: this is also a great pizza sauce should you ever need a quick go to!
- Stock cubes: we want to use 2 stock cubes that we crush with our fingers and sprinkle into the slow cooker. These help to add a ton of flavor to the savory mince.
- Italian herbs: Italian herbs or Italian seasoning is a combination of dried oregano, thyme and parsley. It is super handy to have in the cupboard and great to use in many recipes.
- Worcestershire sauce: a fantastic sauce for adding a little oomph to recipes. I simply love the smell and taste of this sauce (you will too!).
- Onion: simple and easy, we peel and dice 1 medium onion and add the whole thing.
- Frozen vegetables: I like to use a combination of frozen peas, corn and carrot for this recipe. It is a trio of vegetables that you can purchase in a bag from the freezer section. No prep work needed for these as you can simply measure and then add them to the slow cooker.
- Water: we use a small amount of water in the recipe to increase the overall liquid volume and to not add another flavor, but to allow the flavors already in the mix to shine through!
- Tomato puree: you will find this in a can in the pasta ailse in the supermarket, where the pasta sauces are. It is rich in tomato flavor and helps to thicken the sauciness of the savoury mince.
- Beef mince: beef mince or ground beef is one of the most economical and easy to get your hands on cuts of beef. Hugely versatile, satisfying and delicious, it lends itself to a wide number of flavor combinations, this one included!
Top Tip: I like to provide you with a number of substitutions and variations giving you an array of options when making my recipes. If in doubt of any of the above ingredients, or wanting alternatives, read this section (further below) before jumping into the instructions on how to make the recipe which are coming next 😉👌.
🍳 Instructions
Here are the step by step instructions to make the recipe. We start by layering the ingredients into the slow cooker insert.
- Add the onion (Photo 1)
- Then add the frozen vegetables (Photo 2)
- Add the raw beef mince (Photo 3)
- Then add the salt and pepper (Photo 4)
👩🍳 How to Make Slow Cooker Savoury Mince
To make the savory mince in the slow cooker, start by adding the diced onion to the bowl. On top of that add the frozen vegetables, then the beef mince and salt and pepper as you see in the photos above.
- Add the Italian herbs (Photo 5)
- Add the garlic (Photo 6)
- Dollop in the tomato paste (Photo 7)
- Pour in the Worcestershire sauce (Photo 8)
Next, sprinkle in the Italian herbs, garlic, tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce as you see in the photos above.
- Crush the stock cubes in (Photo 9)
- Pour in the tomato puree (Photo 10)
- Add the water (Photo 11)
- Then stir (Photo 12)
Once done crush the stock cubes with your fingers and sprinkle them over the dish, then pour in the tomato puree followed by the water.
Next take a wooden spoon and gently stir to combine all of the ingredients as well as breaking up the beef as you go. You can see what this will look like when you have taken this step in the final photo above.
When everything has been combined, you can pop the lid on and set the timer and temperature.
The cooking time for the dish is either 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low. Both cook times work well for the mince and you can choose which suits you best. You can also then keep the mince on 'warm' until you are ready to serve it.
🍽 Serving Suggestions
When it comes to serving your savoury mince, you have plenty of options! A creamy bed of Mashed Potatoes is a great idea (especially if you haven't added potatoes to the recipe itself). Some people might like a dollop of Mashed Peas on the side instead!
Toasted bread like rye or sourdough is a good choice or cooked rice or pasta.
You will likely find that this is a full and satisfying main meal that will go down a treat with a number of options! Switch it up and serve it with toast some nights or rice other nights 😉👌. You can also use it as a cottage pie filling if you wish too!
It is the ultimate comfort food with the added bonus of cooking itself! I am talking 'winner, winner end of the day dinner' done woot! And P.S. a smooth glass of red wine like a pinot noir will go down a treat with it 😉👌
👍 How to Guide
How to Store
Let the savoury mince fully cool. Then portion into an airtight container (or multiple) and stack in the fridge. Then can be refridgerated for 3-4 days and need to be reheated before being consumed.
How to Freeze
To freeze the mince, follow the step above by letting it cool. Then portion and stack in containers in the freezer. They can be frozen for 2-3 months.
How to Reheat
For refridgerated leftovers, transfer them to a bowl and cover with cling wrap. Then place them into the microwave. Use high heat and 1 minute increments until the mince is heated through (it usually takes 3 minutes total).
For frozen portions, let these fully thaw. Once they have use the method in the step above to transfer them into a bowl and microwave them. I find that thawed leftovers take an extra 1-2 minutes to heat and are best given a stir or 2 throughout the reheating process.
😉 Substitutions and Variations
Here are my sub ins and outs that you might be thinking about as you read the post and I will tell you if I think they will work or why they won't:
- In place of the combined dried mixed herbs, you can use 1 teaspoon of either dried parsely, oregano, thyme or basil.
- If you want to add mushrooms as an extra vegetable you can. My recommendation is to slice them and add in the final 30 minutes of cook time (yes, you have to break the cardinal rule of not removing the lid, but this saves them from going mushy).
- Or for other vegetable ideas try chopped potatoes, green beans or tinned tomatoes.
- You can use vegetable stock in place of the water if you wish too (however, we do want to be careful not to add more salt which the stock does but the water does not, fyi if considering this point). A low sodium version would be best.
- I don't recommend using soy sauce in place of the Worcestershire sauce. Whilst good and having its time and place, it just isn't the same as the 'oomph' we get from the Worcestershire.
- You can use lean beef mince if you wish too.
💡 Tasty Tips
Here are my top tips and tricks that I want to share with you so that you master the recipe from the get go:
- There is no need to spray or grease the slow cooker bowl with oil before adding the ingredients.
- Re the point above, we don't use any oil for the recipe whatsoever!
- We want to give the ingredients a really good stir to combine them before we turn the temperature on. Use a wooden spoon and try and break up the beef mince so that it doesn't cook in clumps.
- Layering - you don't have to add the ingredients to the slow cooker in the exact same order as I am. Essentially for this recipe, we throw it all in. The important bit is to not skip the stirring I mention above 😄👍.
- If you love slow cooking, then you might also like the French Onion Pork Chops, Dry Rub Ribs, Dahl, Chicken Barley Soup, Chicken And Corn Soup, Pork Chops With Apples, Pumpkin Soup, Chicken Spaghetti or the Mushroom Soup 😉👌.
