    ๐Ÿค Recipe Highlights

I have summarised everything that you will come to know and love (LOVE โค) about the recipe in the points below:

    • Simple ingredients: each of the ingredients are easy to get your hands on at the supermarket. This will save you driving all over town or going to speciality stores for that one tricky to find but 'essential' ingredient.
    • Straight forward and easy: whilst I stop at saying the recipe is 'quick and easy' as it involves a longish 2 step cook time, I do describe the recipe as easy as they are simple steps and we need only take 1 after the other.
    • Oven baked ribs: save heading out to the BBQ or loading the air fryer, this ribs recipe is tailor made for the oven, both using the bake function as well as the grill.
    • No marinade time glaze: you don't have to marinade these ribs for hours on end before cooking which saves time and energy. You can simply brush the marinade onto the ribs and then start cooking them. This is perfect for those nights when you want to get dinner sorted but don't want to start thinking about it a day in advance.
    • Variety: ribs are a great choice when you are looking for variety in terms of cuts of meat. Be you wanting a change from steak, pork loin, pork chops, chicken, ground meats or cutlets, they offer a diverse eating experience, one that may have you licking the juices running down your chin! ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ˜‰.

    ๐Ÿฅ— Ingredients

The photo below is to show you everything you need to make the recipe. Please refer to the printable recipe card for specific ingredient measurements as well as detailed instructions.

    Ingredients needed for the recipe

As you can see the recipe calls for:

    • Pork spare ribs: these are individually cut ribs that are larger than baby back ribs. You will be able to source them from your local grocery store or butcher.
    • Honey: this sweet, sticky syrup is an excellent ingredient to use in marinades as it blends subtly with a multitude of other ingredients.
    • Soy sauce: regular, not dark soy is used for the recipe. You have the option when purchasing to choose a salt reduced version.
    • Garlic: used to add a lovely depth of flavour to the marinade. The recipe calls for minced, you can also used finely chopped cloves (1 to 2) should you wish to ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ‘.
    • Ginger: a great pairing to the flavours of honey, soy and garlic. Again the recipe calls for minced and for this ingredient I recommend sticking to that as to not let the ginger flavour overpower any of the other ingredients in the recipe.
    • Sweet chilli sauce: an optional ingredient, but you will find that it helps add a lovely sweetness to the ribs.
    • Salt and pepper: a small amount of each of these is added to the sauce to help season the ribs.

Tasty tip: the use of sweet chilli in the recipe as opposed to using red pepper flakes (red chilli flakes) allows you to also use the left over marinade drizzled over the ribs to serve. Using the dried herb prevents this as it would be using a dried, uncooked herb which doesn't tick the 'delicious' box the way the subtle sweet chilli sauce does.

    ๐Ÿณ Instructions

Here at the step by step instructions to make the recipe. The basic summary of steps involved is:

    • Make the marinade.
    • Spray a baking dish with cooking oil.
    • Use kitchen tongs to place pork ribs into dish.
    • Use a pastry brush to coat the ribs in glaze.
    • Cook for 10 mins.
    • Remove, add more marinade then cover.
    • Cook covered.
    • Broil to render the pork fat.

The section below expands on these steps in more detail with photos below.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ How to Make Honey Soy Pork Ribs

Start by making the marinade. This is as simple as combining the honey, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, salt and pepper in a small jug and then using a mini whisk or fork to stir till consistently combined.

    • Brush onto pork ribs (Photo 2)
    • Flip and coat other side (Photo 3)
    • Oven bake 10 mins (Photo 4)

    Step 5
    • Pour remaining marinade over the ribs, cover with foil and cook for 40 mins (Photo 5)

Once you have cooked the ribs for 10 mins, we remove them from the oven, pour the remaining marinade over them and then cover. This helps the ribs to cook without drying out during that process.

Method for honey soy ribs with text label step 6
    Step 6
    • Grill the ribs for 15 mins (Photo 6)

The ribs will be a pale grey colour when they are cooked and the top fat layer thick and rubbery. So we take the step of grilling the ribs in the oven at high heat on the top shelf to finish the cooking and turn the ribs into a lovely golden brown colour.

    ๐Ÿฝ Serving Suggestions

You can drizzle the remaining marinade (from the glass) over the ribs for extra juiciness if you like or increase the quantity of the marinade to use it more like a sauce for the ribs.

When I 1st published this recipe back in 2018, I recommended serving the ribs with steamed green vegetables and coconut rice. These are still good choices and create a balance.

If you want a more carby side the Garlic Butter Potatoes, Creamy Garlic Potatoes or Garlic Pizza Bread deliver garlic yum and good diversity.

If you want chips either the Air Fryer Chips or Gravy Fries work well.

For a lighter option, the Cherry Tomato Caprese Salad will bring freshness, flavour and pops of colour.

    ๐Ÿ‘ How to Guide

    How to Store

Store left over ribs in the fridge in a sealed air tight container for up to 2 days. Reheat prior to consuming.

    How to Freeze

You can store raw ribs in the freezer for up to 2 months then remove ahead of time to cook. To thaw, remove the ribs from the freezer and place in the fridge a day ahead or overnight.

    How to Reheat

You can use the oven, microwave or air fryer to reheat leftover ribs. Like most dishes the reheated leftovers may not taste as good as the juicy results you get when you consume them straight after cooking. The microwave will be the fastest way to reheat the ribs, but the air fryer or oven will return the better tasting results.

    ๐Ÿ˜‰ Substitutions and Variations

Here are my sub ins and outs that you might be thinking about as you read the post and I will tell you if I think they will work or why they won't:

    • You can use this marinade on other styles and types of ribs if you want. Some options are baby back ribs or lamb ribs.
    • You can use maple syrup in place of the honey if you want to.
    • Omit the sweet chilli sauce if you want a more basic combination of flavours in the marinade.
    • You can add a teaspoon or 2 of brown sugar to the marinade if you wish to (a good option if you want to omit the sweet chilli sauce).
    • Double the marinade and use more of it as 'sauce' when serving.
    • A lot of people like their ribs with BBQ sauce, I won't stop you if you want to serve them with a slather of this also. But ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜โ€ฆor should I say however, I think you will find the sweet, sticky saucy yum-ness of the honey soy marinade so good that you can leave the BBQ sauce on the shelf and get busy licking your face as you devour this alternate flavour to BBQ ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜˜ .
    • Check out all of my homemade sauces for options to pair with the ribs when serving.

    ๐Ÿ’ก Tasty Tips

Here are my top tips and tricks that I want to share with you so that you master the recipe from the get go:

    • Ensure that the oven is preheated as a step in your process. This means that the cook times specified in the recipe card will be accurate. If you add the ribs to the oven without it being preheated, they will take a lot longer to cook.
    • Grilling the ribs at the end of the 'oven baked' cook time really produces spectacular results. The extra time and step to get the ribs looking like they do in the photos throughout the post is worth it ๐Ÿ˜‰.

    ๐Ÿค“ Frequently Asked Questions

How long should pork ribs cook in the oven?

The ribs need to be cooked for just over an hour in the oven. This involved both an 'oven baked' time as well as the 'grilling' time.

Should you cover pork ribs in the oven?

Yes, it is a good idea to cover pork ribs for part of their cooking time as this will save them drying out and ensure that they are tender and juicy.

Should I wrap my ribs in aluminum foil?

It is not necessary to wrap your rubs in aluminium foil, however if you notice that they look like the meat if getting too dry then remove them from the oven, cover with foil and place them back into the oven to continue cooking.
