Toasted Sandwiches
In Australia we call toasted sandwiches 'jaffles', sometimes 'grilled cheese' or 'toastie'. Our much loved slang word for lunch sandwiches is 'sanga'.
A sanga or toastie is a popular choice for lunch as they are simple to make and you have a wide variety of fillings so you will never get bored of brainstorming endless combinations!
You can get a jaffle maker which will make the job easy for you or a sandwich press, but these days I prefer making them on the stove in a pan. I feel they get less 'squashed' that way and you get a decent feed that hits the spot!
Toasted ideas (fillings galore!)
Visualise of any type of sandwich filling you can think of and then imagine it toasted. If 'ohhh yum' comes to mind, then it will probably work as a grilled cheese too.
Some ideas are:
- ham, cheese and tomato
- chicken and cheese
- pesto chicken (leftovers woot woot)
- pastrami
- cheese and onion
- bacon
- spaghetti grilled cheese (lots of carbs in this one!)
Baked Bean toastie ingredients
The ingredients you need for this toastie are shown in the photo below:
As you can see we have:
- sourdough (mine is 'rye sourdough')
- baked beans
- cheese
- spinach leaves
- BBQ sauce
- butter
How to make Baked Bean Toasties
There is approximately 6 steps to take to pull this delicious recipe together. They are shown in the series of photos below:
We start by buttering one side of each slice of bread (photo 1-above).
Then spread a little bit of BBQ sauce on the other side of the bread (photo 2-above).
Next we place the buttered side of bread down onto the fry pan (photo 3 below).
Then we spread our spinach leaves out on top of the cheese layer (photo 4).
As we are doing each of these steps, it is important to not overfill our toasties. That would mean oozying ingredients slipping out everywhere making the crusts soggy.
Next we scoop our baked beans onto the spinach layer (photo 5). Making sure that we have just enough but not too much filling!
Then we close the toastie with the final slice of buttered bread (photo 6)..
We cook the toastie on one side then 'flip' to cook the other side and as we don't use any oil or butter in the pan directly, the buttered bread melts, toasts the bread and prevents the sandwich sticking to the pan!

📖 Recipe
Baked Bean Toastie
Equipment
- French pan or fry pan
Ingredients
Baked Bean Toastie
- 4 slices sourdough bread Note 1
- 200 grams baked beans Note 2
- 40 grams cheese Note 3
- 60 grams spinach leaves
- BBQ sauce Note 4
- 30 grams butter Note 5
Instructions
Baked Bean Toastie method
- Butter 1 side of 4 slices of sourdough bread
- Use a bread knife to spread BBQ sauce on the other side of each slice of bread
- Place your fry pan on the stove top and turn to a low-medium heat
- Place one buttered side of bread onto the pan, followed by the 2nd for the next toastie
- On top of the BBQ sauce add your cheese and spinach followed by baked beans
- Close the sandwich with the remaining bread slices, butter side up
- Cook the toastie until the cheese starts to melt and bind the ingredients. When the 1st side is crispy and golden (sneak a peak) use a flat utensil and flip the sandwich one by one to cook the other side. Each side will take 3-5 mins to toast
- Serve with small bowl of BBQ sauce for dipping crusts
Notes
- Note 1 The bread I have used for this post is rye sourdough. You can use whatever your favourite bread is!
- Note 2 A standard tin of baked beans is 420 grams. As we don't want our filling spilling out in the fry pan and making our crusts soggy, we need to put a smaller amount of beans onto the sandwich than we would if we were doing an open sandwich.
- Note 3 I use regular or light pre-grated cheese. You only need a little to get the cheesy effect and the same point above applys for this. If we over fill our toastie it will be oozying out, we want a little ooze but not an overwhelming amount.
- Note 4 The BBQ sauce is my favourite ingredient here to tie all of the others together, just a little on one side of each slice of bread is needed.
- Note 5 I use regular spreadable butter for this recipe. I prefer it to spray oil as the bread gets a lot more toasted and crispy. Use your favourite spread and butter one side of each slice.
