🥗 Ingredients
The photo below is to show you everything you need to make the garlic prawn pizza recipe. Please refer to the printable recipe card for specific ingredient measurements as well as detailed instructions.
As you can see the recipe calls for:
- Prawns: fresh raw prawns that you peel and devein yourself will have the most flavor. You can get these from the deli or seafood section of the supermarket.
- Mozzarella: the mozzarella cheese brings the ooey gooey cheesy melty to the pizza. Yet it is rather mild in flavor. So we use another cheese (two cheese pizza, yes please!) as well so that we get the best of both cheese worlds 😉👍.
- Cheese: this is the 2nd type of cheese needed for the pizza. I use colby as it is a great melting cheese and provides a nice contrast to the stringy mozzarella cheese.
- Pizza base: it can be so easy to use a store bought loaf of Turkish bread, Ciabatta or French bread to make pizza. You literally only need slice it in halves and it is good to go. Feel free to use your favorite pizza base.
🍕 Pizza Sauce
- Salt and pepper: we use salt and a little bit of black pepper for seasoning in the pizza sauce.
- Garlic: it wouldn't be a garlic prawn pizza if we didn't have garlic in the recipe right 😂👌. Fresh garlic cloves or chunky chopped garlic is good too. After we have spread the sauce onto the pizza base, we dunk the prawns in it so that they are flavored to perfection before being cooked on top of the pizza.
- Parsley: this is flat leaf parsley. We use some in the sauce and some on top of the pizza for garnish.
- Tomato paste: this lovely thick and rich with tomato flavor paste gets added to the diced tomatoes for the sauce. It helps to thicken the sauce and ensure top notch flavour.
Tasty Tip: I like to provide you with a number of substitutions and variations giving you an array of options when making the recipe. If in doubt of any of the above ingredients, or wanting alternatives, read this section (further below) before jumping into the instructions on how to make the recipe which are coming next 😉👌.
🍳 Instructions
Here are the step by step instructions to make the delicious pizza recipe. We start by preparing the pizza base.
- Prepare the pizza base (Photo 1)
- Add the sauce ingredients to a small bowl (Photo 2)
- Stir to combine (Photo 3)
- Spread the sauce onto the pizza base (Photo 4)
👩🍳 How to Make Prawn Pizza
Start to make the pizza by rolling the pizza base, removing the packaging from a pre rolled pizza base, use a rolling pin to roll a dough ball or slicing a bread loaf in halves as you seen on the photo above.
You can also use this time to preheat your oven so it will be ready when you come to put the pizza in it.
Next gather the sauce ingredients. Starting with the diced tomatoes add them to a small bowl, followed by the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt, pepper and chopped parsley.
Stir to combine the sauce then use a wooden spoon to dollop the sauce onto the pizza base and use the back of a spoon to spread it out into a layer touching the edges of the base also.
- Add a cheese layer (Photo 5)
- Then add the prawns to the remaining sauce (Photo 6)
- Spread the prawns onto the cheese layer (Photo 7)
- Add another cheese layer (Photo 8)
Next add a cheese layer on top of the pizza sauce and then take the prawns and add them to the leftover pizza sauce. Give them a stir in the bowl to get them all saucy and then spread them out over both sides of the pizza as you see in the photo above.
Once the prawns are on your pizza, top them with the remaining cheese.
Next transfer the finished pizza to a pizza tray or pizza stone and place it onto the middle shelf of the hot oven.
Let the pizza oven bake for 10-15 minutes or until you can see that the prawns are cooked (have changed colour to bright orange) and that the cheese had melted.
Once cooked, use oven mitts or a tea towel to remove the pizza from the oven, place it onto a cutting board and use a pizza wheel to slice it into individual pieces.
The next step is to get your garnish on with a sprinkle of some flat parsley leaves and get ready to serve your homemade prawn pizza.

👍 How to Guide
How to Store
Store leftover pizza slices in an airtight container or plate with plastic wrap in the fridge for 2-3 days. They are best reheated before being consumed.
How to Reheat
Place the leftover pizza slices onto a plate covered with cling film and heat for 1-2 minutes in the microwave. Or place the pizza slices back into the oven or air fryer and cook till warmed through.
How to Freeze
Leftover prawn pizza can be placed into an airtight container and stored in the freezer. Then heat from frozen by placing the slices back into the oven until the cheese has melted and the toppings warmed through. Note: if however, your prawns were frozen to begin with it is not recommended to refreeze them.
😉 Substitutions and Variations
Here are my sub ins and outs that you might be thinking about as you read the post and I will tell you if I think they will work or why they won't:
- I like to use flat leaf parsley to garnish the pizza as it sticks with the Italian theme of the sauce. You can also use basil if you prefer.
- You can use crushed tomatoes in place of the diced tomatoes if you wish too.
- For the pizza base you can use your preferred style. Be it homemade pizza dough, store bought sough, naan bread, pita bread, French bread or our favorite pizza base.
- As for the type of prawn to use, banana prawns, king prawns or tiger prawns are all good options.
- Unfortunately you cannot use pre cooked prawns for the pizza. Their texture and pizza don't go hand in hand.
- If you want to add a vegetable to the mix, slice some cherry tomatoes or rocket leaves and pop them on after adding the prawns to the pizza.
- I don't recommend keeping the tails on the prawn. This means mid bite you would have to stop, pull the prawn from the pizza, remove the tail, try and stick the prawn back on the pizza and then take another bite. Ain't nobody got time to peel prawns when they are eating their pizza 😂👌.
💡 Tasty Tips
Here are my top tips and tricks that I want to share with you so that you master the recipe from the get go:
- Dipping the prawns in the Italian style pizza sauce is an idea I came up with related to the flavor combination in the Chorizo and Prawn Linguine recipe. It is a step not to be missed for full flavored prawns. Plus you will have enough sauce to do this, I made sure of it 😉👍.
- Different types of pizza bases may take shorter or longer cook times and vary across ovens and sizes. So keep an eye on your pizza once your put it in the oven and have your nose at the ready to cook it to perfection.
🤓 Frequently Asked Questions
Should you cook shrimp before adding to pizza?
No. There is no need to cook shrimp or prawns before adding them to pizza. They will cook during the time it takes for the cheese to melt.
Can I put frozen prawns on a pizza?
No, it is not recommended to put frozen prawns on a pizza. Doing so would make the pizza soggy as the water from the prawns seeps out during cooking. You can however, allow frozen prawns to thaw, then peel and devein them, patting dry with paper towel and then use these prawns on top of your pizza.
What is the most popular pizza in Australia?
Dominoes reports that the most popular pizza in Australia is the pepperoni pizza!

📖 Recipe
Prawn Pizza
Ingredients
- 1 pizza base Note 1
Pizza sauce
- 400 grams/ 14.5 oz diced tomatoes Note 2
- 2 tbs tomato paste
- 2 tbs Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbs garlic chunky, minced
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoon flat leaf parsely finely chopped with kitchen scissors
- 1 cup colby cheese freshly grated using a hand held or box grater
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese freshly grated using a hand held or box grater
Pizza topping
- 500 grams/ 16 oz prawns fully peeled included the tails removed and deveined
Garnish (optional)
- flat leaf parsley leaves, cut from stems, roughly chopped
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: preheat the oven to 180°C / 350-375°F / Gas Mark 4-5.
- Pizza base: prepare your pizza base either by rolling, removing the packaging or cutting a bread loaf in half lengthways.
- Pizza sauce: add the diced tomatoes, tomato pasta, worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt, pepper and parsley to a small bowl and stir to combine.
- Prawns: fully peel the prawns including removing the tail and then slice the back of them open and remove the digestive track. Then pat dry with paper towel.
- Sauce onto pizza: use a soup spoon to dollop the pizza sauce onto the pizza base. Then flip the spoon and use the back of it to spread the sauce out into a layer that reaches all the way to the edges of the pizza base.
- Prawns into sauce: add the peeled prawns to the remaining sauce and stir to combine.
- Cheese layer: sprinkle a layer of cheese over the top of the pizza sauce.
- Prawns onto pizza: spread the sauce covered prawns out across the cheese layer.
- Second cheese layer: sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top of the pizza.
- Oven bake: transfer the pizza to a silicon mat over a baking rack. Then place the tray into the oven on the middle shelf and let the pizza cook for 10 minutes or until the prawns are bright orange and the cheese has melted. Note 3
- To serve: use oven mitts to remove the baking tray from the oven and use a pair of tongs to help slide the pizza onto a cutting board. Then use a pizza wheel to slice the pizza into portions. Garnish with chopped flat leaf parsley and serve.
Notes
- Note 1 - Pizza base: it can be so easy to use a store bought loaf of Turkish bread, Ciabatta or French bread to make pizza. You literally only need slice it in halves and it is good to go. However, feel free to use your favorite pizza base, each to their own in this regard.
- Note 2 - Diced tomatoes: for my eagle eyed readers 🥰, 400 grams is actually 14.1 oz not 14.5. However, I specify this as I know that Walmart sell a 14.5 oz tin of diced tomatoes and there is no point in not using that full amount, it is a very close margin.
- Note 3 - Pizza base: to crisp up the pizza base, I usually slide the pizza off any supporting tray onto the oven rack towards the end (5 minutes) of the cook time. This ensures that the crusts are crispy and the base firm and cooked nicely.
- Note - Portion size: this is a filling and satisfying pizza! You will likely find that you would eat less of it than a thin and crispy pizza or other type of pizza topping combination. Hence I have used 4 portions for the whole pizza as it would be enough to be shared across 4 people/meals. If however, you are doing a thin base like a pita bread or naan then you might want to make 2 pizzas to feed 4 people.
