🥗 Ingredients
The photo below is to show you everything you need to make the shrimp fritters recipe. Please refer to the printable recipe card for specific ingredient measurements as well as detailed instructions.
As you can see the recipe calls for:
- Vegetable oil: we use vegetable oil to fry the fritters on the stove top.
- Salt and pepper: we use salt and a little bit of black pepper to season the fritters. Cooking salt (kosher salt) is the best type to use over regular table salt.
- Egg: the egg is one of 2 wet ingredients that are used to make the fritter batter.
- Onion powder: we use onion powder as one of the dried powders to provide seasoning in the fritter batter.
- Garlic powder: the garlic powder is the 2nd of the 2 dried powders. It goes hand in hand with the dried onion.
- Milk: this is the 2nd of the wet ingredients needed for the batter.
- Plain flour: plain flour or all purpose flour is what we are looking for.
- Corn: juicy and bursting with freshness! This vegetable is the perfect pairing to the prawns. We need 1 x standard tin of corn kernels which we drain and rinse before using.
- Prawns: fresh raw prawns or shrimp can be used. We want to get the whole raw version which we then peel and devein ourselves for best results.
Tasty Tip: I like to provide you with a number of substitutions and variations giving you an array of options when making my recipes. If in doubt of any of the above ingredients, or wanting alternatives, read this section (further below) before jumping into the instructions on how to make the recipe which are coming next 😉👌.
🍳 Instructions
Here are the step by step instructions to make the recipe. We start by preparing the prawns. You will find a small knife and cutting board handy to begin with.
- Peel and devein the prawns (Photo 1)
- Then chop into chunky pieces (Photo 2)
- Combine the dry ingredients (Photo 3)
- Add the milk to the bowl (Photo 4)
👩🍳 How to Make Prawn Fritters
To make the prawn fritters start by preparing the prawns. To do so twist to remove the prawn heads and discard them. Then remove the tails and peel the shell and legs of the prawns off.
Once done, use a small knife to cut along the backside of each prawn. Remove the digestive track and then repeat this process until each of the prawns are done.
Next use a knife to chop the prawns into chunky pieces as you see me having done in the photo above.
When you are ready get started on the fritter batter. Add the plain flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper to a large mixing bowl. Then use a wooden spoon to stir and combine.
- Add the beaten egg (Photo 5)
- Then stir and combine (Photo 6)
- Add the chopped prawns (Photo 7)
- Next add the corn kernels (Photo 8)
Next add the whisked egg and stir to combine the fritter batter.
Once you have, add the prawn meat to the bowl, followed by the corn kernels.
Then gently stir to consistently combine.
- Stir to combine (Photo 9)
🦐 Prawn Fritters Recipe
When the wet fritter batter is consistently combined, place a large frying pan onto the stove top, turn the heat to high and add the vegetable oil.
Then you can portion the mixture using an ice-cream scoop as you see me doing in the photo below.
- Use ice-cream scoop to portion the wet batter (Photo 10)
Once the oil is hot (you can feel this by holding your hand above the pan) start to spoon in the batter. Dollop the mixture in, the flip the spoon and use it to slightly flatten the top of the batter. This makes the shape more wide and flat as opposed to round and high.
You can then work in batches and cook 2-3 fritters at a time. Once the 1st side is golden and crispy (around 2-3 minutes) use a slotted spoon to flip the fritters to the other side and cook these for 2-3 minutes also.
- Cook one side, then flip and cook the other side (Photo 11)
Repeat this process working in batches of 2-3 fritters until the mixture is all used up.
Once the fritters are cooked, you can transfer them out of the pan and place them onto a paper towel lined plate. This will allow any excess oil to be absorbed before you serve the fritters.
🍽 Serving Suggestions
When it comes to serving the fritters, you have plenty of options available to you.
A side salad like the Cherry Tomato Caprese Salad, Healthy Panzanella Salad or Fresh Herb Salad will work well.
For a potato side, try the Potato And Broccoli Bake, Potato And Ham Bake, Potato And Onion Bake or the Potato And Sweet Potato Bake.
For sauce I like to pair them with sweet chilli sauce as the flavor combination works so very well! You can also pair them with the Garlic Yogurt Sauce, Lemon Yogurt Sauce, Cilantro Lime Yogurt Sauce or the Spicy Yogurt Sauce.
Or for sauce with more punch try the Tomato Bacon Jam or Chilli Tomato Jam.
Or for simplicity, serve them with fresh spinach or rocket leaves, some sliced cherry tomatoes, lemon wedges and a big dollop of sauce on top! It is an easy, effortless pairing that makes for a light meal that won't drain your energy😉👍.
👍 How to Guide
How to Store
Store leftover fritters in a sealed, airtight container in the fridge. They can be kept for 2 days and need to be reheated before being consumed.
How to Freeze
Freezing the fritters once cooked will take away their crispiness and lend them towards being a little soggy. For this reason, I don't recommend freezing the fritters. Heat and eat or heat and eat the leftovers.
How to Reheat
You can reheat any leftover fritters in the microwave on a plate covered with cling wrap for 1-2 minutes until warmed through. Or for more crispy results, reheat them in hot oil on the stove top in a pan with a little vegetable oil.
😉 Substitutions and Variations
Here are my sub ins and outs that you might be thinking about as you read the post and I will tell you if I think they will work or why they won't:
- For the prawns, you can use King prawns, banana prawns, tiger prawns or jumbo shrimp. We want to chop them into chunky pieces so you still get the texture of the prawn when eating the fritters.
- You can use gluten free flour or coconut flour if you prefer too.
- You can also use your favorite type of milk be it cow's milk or a plant based milk.
- Add a teaspoon of curry powder when adding the garlic and onion powders if you wish too.
- If you want to use olive oil or sunflower oil to cook the fritters you can.
- Garnish with finely chopped spring onions in place of the fresh herbs if you wish too.
💡 Tasty Tips
Here are my top tips and tricks that I want to share with you so that you master the recipe from the get go:
- No need to use electric beaters or a stand mixer for this recipe. You can simply use a wooden spoon to stir the batter together and again after adding the prawns and corn.
- An ice-cream scoop is a super handy way of portioning the fritter batter into the hot frying pan. Using one will also ensure that each of your fritters are the same (ish) size.
- Top up the vegetable oil as needed in between batches of cooking the fritters.
- Resting the cooked fritters on paper towel once cooked will allow any excess oil to be absorbed.
- If you love prawns, you might also like to try the Prawn Fettuccine, Prawn Risotto, Prawn Pesto Pasta, Prawn Chow Mein, Prawn Pizza or the Prawn Tagliatelle 😁👌.
