🤍 Recipe Highlights
I have summarised everything that you will come to know and love (LOVE ❤) about the recipe in the points below:
- Christmas baking: is fun and everyone can get involved! Both no bake and baked recipes allow us to cook in a festive, fun manner with the Christmas carols on Spotify in the background!
- No bake: we use the microwave to melt the copha and then simply pour it over the dry ingredients to combine. There is no oven or air fryer needed!
- Simple steps: this recipe comes together effortlessly. We use the microwave to melt the copha and then simply combine that with the wet ingredients.
- Party food: everyone from little kids to big kids love chocolate crackles. Adding some festive touches make them the perfect Christmas party food!
- Budget friendly ingredients: there is nothing in this recipe that will blow the budget or break the bank. You can use home brand ingredients as a cost effective method as there is minimal noticeable in a recipe like this 😉🥰.
🥗 Ingredients
The photo below is to show you everything you need to make the recipe. Please refer to the printable recipe card for specific ingredient measurements as well as detailed instructions.
As you can see the recipe calls for:
- Sprinkles: for decorating. I use a combination of chocolate sprinkles and gold star sprinkles.
- Red, green and brown mini m and m's: these are Christmas colours! Plus they have great crunch about them.
- Spearmint leaves: we need about 1 whole leaf per chocolate crackle. you can use a knife and chopping board or kitchen scissors to chop as a prep step.
- Copha: you will find this in the refrigerated section of the store, likely where the butter and solid lard is. It is vegetable shortening that is made with coconut oil.
- Cocoa powder: a soft fine powder that we are using to turn the rice bubbles into 'chocolate crackles'.
- Icing Sugar: this is also known as confectioner's sugar. It is a soft, white, powdered not granulated type of sugar.
- Desiccated coconut: this is the most common type of coconut sold. It is the short, uniform type, not the shredded longer type.
- Rice bubbles: you might know them as rice krispies. You don't need to get a premium brand, a cheaper, no name brand is totally fine!
Tasty Tip: you don't have to use the exact same combination of sprinkles are me. You can use your favourite festive combination of colours, tastes and textures 👍🎄😉!
🍳 Instructions
Here at the step by step instructions to make the Christmas Chocolate Crackles recipe. We start by lining the muffin tin with patty paper liners.
- Line muffin tin with paper wrappers (Photo 1)
- Melt copha (Photo 2)
- Combine the dry ingredients (Photo 3)
- Add the melted copha (Photo 4)
Tasty tip: for extra chocolate factor in the recipe, I add ½ of the chocolate sprinkles to the dry ingredients and stir and combine. The remaining ones are used to decorate the tops of the crackles. You can see what I am referring to in photo 3 above.
👩🍳 How to Make Christmas Chocolate Crackles
To make the crackles, the process is to combine the dry ingredients and then use the copha to help these ingredients stick together when refrigerated. For the Christmas aspect, we add half of the combined sprinkle mixture to the chocolate crackles and then use the rest to decorate the tops of them.
- Combine the various sprinkles and candy (Photo 5)
- Add half to the wet crackle mixture (Photo 6)
- Spoon into patty cases (Photo 7)
- Top with remaining sprinkles (Photo 8)
Once you have decorated the Christmas crackles with the sprinkle mixture, pop the muffin tray into the fridge. They need to chill for 1 hour to set.

😉 Substitutions and Variations
Here are my sub ins and outs that you might be thinking about as you read the post and I will tell you if I think they will work or why they won't:
- If you want to make a white version of these (White Christmas Crackles), omit the cocoa powder, but keep the rest of the ingredients the same.
- You can use your favourite sprinkle combination that reminds you of Christmas and looks a bit festive! (You don't have to use the exact combination as me 😉👍.
- If you don't want to use coconut, you can omit it from the recipe.
- Coconut oil is a substitute that can be used in place of the copha.
- Red licorice chopped into pieces is another 'red' candy that can be used in place of the red m and m's.
- If you want to you can add crushed nuts and or mini marshmallows for something different 😉
💡 Tasty Tips
Here are my top tips and tricks that I want to share with you so that you master the recipe from the get go:
- Choose a colour of patty pan liners that seem a little festive to add to the theme!
- The handle of the heatproof jug will be very hot once the copha has melted, so use an oven mit or tea towel when grabbing this out of the microwave.
- Use 2 spoons to transfer the wet crackle mixture into the muffin liners.
