- Peanut oil: we use the peanut oil when we are sautéing the garlic, onion and bacon.
- Salt and pepper: we use salt and a little bit of black pepper for seasoning in the recipe.
- Garlic: you can use 2-3 cloves of fresh garlic, chunky chopped garlic as you see in the photo above or jarred minced garlic. Opt for whichever is the most convenient for you.
- Sesame oil: a lovely aromatic and fragrant rice. Its flavor is unmistakeable in the rice.
- Soy sauce: this is regular soy sauce.
- Oyster sauce: thick and rich. This sauce is hugely popular in Asian recipes.
- Worcestershire sauce: my secret sauce for everything! Loaded with flavor it adds a couple of drops of serious yum to the fried rice.
- Chinese cooking wine: also known as Shaoxing wine. You will be able to get this from the grocery store in the Asian foods aisle.
- Green onions: we want to slice some of these and sprinkle them over the top of the dish when ready to serve the rice.
- Onion: we want to peel and dice ½ of a large brown onion.
- Egg: free range is always best! We want to crack them into a bowl, whisk and scramble to cook.
- Bacon: store bought diced bacon is the easiest! We can simply throw it in the pan and let it cook, no chopping required.
- Frozen vegetables: a combination of frozen peas, carrot and corn can be found in the frozen vegetables section of the store. This is a colourful trio that works very well in the fried rice!
- Cooked brown rice: we want to use cooked and cooled brown rice for the recipe. It can be made the day before and refrigerated over night till ready to use.
Tasty Tip: I like to provide you with a number of substitutions and variations giving you an array of options when making my recipes. If in doubt of any of the above ingredients, or wanting alternatives, read this section (further below) before jumping into the instructions on how to make the recipe which are coming next 😉👌.
🍳 Instructions
Here are the step by step instructions to make the recipe. We start by making the sauce.
- Gather the sauce ingredients (Photo 1)
- Whisk to combine (Photo 2)
- Whisk the eggs (Photo 3)
- Scramble to cook (Photo 4)
👩🍳 How to Make Brown Rice Fried Rice
To make the brown rice fried rice, start by gathering the ingredients to make the sauce. Then add the soy sauce, oyster sauce, Chinese cooking wine, Worcestershire sauce and sesame oil to a small glass. Whisk to combined and then set aside.
Next working 1 at a time crack each of the eggs into a bowl and use a fork to whisk them. Once done place a large sauté pan on the stove top and turn the heat to high. Pour the beaten eggs into the pan and scramble them to cook, using a silicon turner to break them into small pieces as you go. Once the scrambled eggs are cooked, transfer them out of the pan and onto a plate.
When ready now add the peanut oil, onion, bacon, salt and pepper to the pan, followed by the garlic.
- Add the oil, onion, bacon, salt and pepper (Photo 5)
- As well as adding the garlic (Photo 6)
- Add the peas, corn and carrots (Photo 7)
- Add the cooked rice (Photo 8)
You can add the garlic at the same time as the oil, bacon, onion, salt and pepper, I forgot then saw it sitting on the bench which is why there is 2 photos above 😂👍.
🍚 Fried Brown Rice
Allow the onion to soften and the bacon to crisp a little as you stir fry them and once they have, add the frozen mixed vegetables to the pan. Let these thaw and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring as you go.
Then add the cooked brown rice to the pan and pour the sauce over the top.
- Pour the rice over the sauce (Photo 9)
Once you have poured the rice over the sauce, take a few minutes to work it in and ensure consistent coverage in the pan. This can be done with the help of a wooden spoon or silicon turner and will not take too long.
- Add the cooked egg (Photo 10)
Next add the cooked eggs back to the pan like you see me having done in the photo above.
- Toss and heat through (Photo 11)
Finally, you want to toss the egg so that it is gently stirred into the rice and when it is, sprinkle some finely chopped green onions over the top of the dish as a garnish.
Then you are all done my friend!
🍽 Serving Suggestions
When it comes to serving your rice, the world is your oyster! There is a wide variety of ways to pair it with meaty mains or simply whip up some Spring Rolls in the air fryer and call it a complete meal!
It will go down a treat as a great side dish to the Roast Chicken, Beef Back Ribs, Chicken or Lamb Ribs 😉👌.
Similarly with the Marinated Chicken Thighs, Sweet and Sour Ribs, Coca Cola Ribs or the Pulled Beef Brisket.
Take it as your dish to a picnic, pot luck or family gathering! It will shine alongside the rest of the food and is not a dish that needs to take center stage.
👍 How to Guide
How to Store
Store leftovers of the fried rice in a sealed airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. The leftovers need to be reheated before being consumed.
How to Freeze
Allow the rice to fully cool. Then portion into containers. Portions of the fried rice can be frozen for up to 3 months and are best thawed and then reheated before consuming.
How to Reheat
The brown fried rice can be heated in bowls with cling wrap in the microwave using high heat for 2 minutes or until heated through.
😉 Substitutions and Variations
Here are my sub ins and outs that you might be thinking about as you read the post and I will tell you if I think they will work or why they won't:
- Peanut oil is recommended due to its affinity with Chinese recipes, however, if you have to use olive oil in its place, it will work also.
- If you want to add additional fresh veggies to the fried brown rice, try adding some diced red pepper, sliced green beans, baby spinach, water chestnuts or use a red onion in place of the diced white onion.
- You can use dark soy sauce in place of the regular soy if you want to get a darker coloured fried rice. In which case, I would do a simple substitute of one for one, ie not add both (too salty).
- Sesame seeds can be used as an alternative garnish to the green onions or you can use both if you wish too.
- Want more protein? Add some cooked shrimp, chicken, beef, pork or crispy tofu to the fried rice.
- If you do want to have the rice as a complete meal but feel it needs a little more, fry some eggs and top each bowl of rice with a fried egg.
- For a more spicy version of the rice, add a small amount of sriracha hot chilli sauce and stir that into the dish for a little heat!
- If you want to use white rice in place of the brown rice, cooked the day before and chilled basmati or Jasmine rice are the recommendations.
💡 Tasty Tips
Here are my top tips and tricks that I want to share with you so that you master the recipe from the get go:
- Usually for fried rice I recommend cooking the rice the day before for the best texture. For brown fried rice, however, as its texture is firm with a nutty flavor this step is not essential.
- I do however, recommend adding the dry brown rice to a sieve and running it under the tap before cooking it as this stops the grains from sticking together once they are cooked.
- I also then recommend cooling this rice in the fridge for a couple of hours after it has cooked.
- You can use leftover brown rice that has been cooked the day before also.
- A microwave rice cooker is a fast and easy way to prepare the rice.
- You can cook the eggs in the pan with the other ingredients if you wish too. The point is after sauteing the frozen vegetables. Simply pull the ingredients to the side and cook them in the space made. I sometimes do this but feel that you get more fluffy eggs if you cook them separately, hence the 2 different techniques.
- Want more protein in the rice? Try the Tuna Fried Rice 😄👍. Want a non fried rice style rice? Try the Microwave Coconut Rice.
- Love simple recipes that pair proteins with rice? Then you might also like the Thai Minced Pork, Satay Prawns, Sweet Chilli Prawns, Mexican Prawns, Sweet and Sour Pork Meatballs or the Creamy Garlic Chicken Thighs 😉👌.
