🥗 Ingredients
The photo below is to show you everything you need to make the Greek baked feta with honey recipe. Please refer to the printable recipe card for specific ingredient measurements as well as detailed instructions.
As you can see the recipe calls for:
- Thyme: this fresh herb is aromatic and fragrant. It is an excellent choice as a way to garnish the cheese for serving.
- Olive oil: we use a little bit of olive oil in the beginning when we start the cooking process.
- Honey: we wouldn't be making baked feta with honey without this show stopper 😉👌. I use regular honey as I always have it on hand, but if you want to lash out and buy thyme honey (yup thyme infused honey) be my guest.
- Feta cheese: I like to use Greek feta for the recipe. It has a firmer texture than Danish feta and holds up well over the bake and grill in the oven.
🍳 Instructions
Here are the step by step instructions to make the recipe. We start by unpacking the feta cheese.
- Place the feta into an ovenproof dish (Photo 1)
👩🍳 How to Make Baked Feta With Honey
To make baked feta with honey start by removing the feta cheese from the packaging. If it is very wet use a folded piece of paper towel to absorb this liquid.
Next place the feta cheese into the centre of an ovenproof dish.
When ready pour the olive oil over the surface of the cheese and use a pastry brush or the back of a spoon to spread this to cover the feta.
- Brush the feta with olive oil (Photo 2)
Once you have covered the cheese with the oil place it into the oven on the middle shelf. Let the feta bake for 8-10 minutes.
Next use a pair of oven mitts to remove the baking dish from the oven and place the baked feta onto a heatproof surface.
Change the setting on the oven to broil and move the oven rack up to the top bracket, also increasing the heat.
Then take the honey and pour it over the top of the cheese like you see in the photo below.
- Cover the feta with honey (Photo 3)
After you have covered the feta with the honey we pop it back into the oven to use the grill (or broil) function to finish the cooking process. During this time the feta turns a lovely golden brown colour with caramelised edges.
This process will take around 5-6 minutes.
Once grilled, use your oven mitts to again remove the baked feta from the oven and place the baking dish onto a heatproof surface.
Now you are ready to serve the cheese!
🍽 Serving Suggestions
When it comes to serving your baked feta, I recommend removing it from the baking dish that you cooked it in. This is because there will be a combination of oil and honey residue in the base of the dish and this doesn't add to the flavor of the feta, more so it takes away from what we have worked so easily 😂 to achieve!
Pita bread or chips are a great pairing for the grilled feta appetizer. Simply spray them with olive oil and then air fry them whilst the cheese is cooking and they will be hot and crispy when the cheese is done!
Some fresh thyme sprinkled over the top works like you see below and if you want a sprinkle of black pepper in the mix that can add a nice touch.
👍 How to Guide
How to Store
Serve the feta as soon as it is cooked.
If you have any leftovers, transfer them to a sealed, airtight container and place in the fridge for 1-2 days.
How to Reheat
Place the leftover baked feta onto a plate and cover with cling wrap. Reheat on high in the microwave in 1 minute increments until it is warmed through.
This recipe is not suitable to freeze.
😉 Substitutions and Variations
Here are my sub ins and outs that you might be thinking about as you read the post and I will tell you if I think they will work or why they won't:
- Add a teaspoon of chilli flakes if you want to spice things up.
- Use maple syrup as an alternative to honey.
- Sprinkle toasted walnuts or crushed nuts over the top to serve.
- I don't recommend using salt at any point in the recipe. The feta is salty enough and we don't want to lean too far into this flavor.
- Whilst you might be tempted to pour more honey over the top of the baked feta to serve it this doesn't give the honey infused baked feta flavor. It is all about the honey being absorbed into the cheese as it softens and heats. If you insist, so be it 😄👍.
💡 Tasty Tips
Here are my top tips and tricks that I want to share with you so that you master the recipe from the get go:
- Ensure that the oven is preheated so that when you add the cheese you will accurately know how long to cook it for.
- When pouring the olive oil over the cheese, focus on the surface of the cheese, not the sides. It is fine if some slides down there, but it is the top that we are looking to cover.
- When broiling the feta keep a close eye on it so that it doesn't burn (can happen quickly).
- You will be able to slide a flat turner under the cheese to move it to a serving platter and it will stay together as a block. However, do be a little bit gentle whilst doing this as it can break apart if your planning on throwing it around.
- Love baked cheese recipes? Then try the Honey Baked Camembert or the Baked Brie with Honey. Or for easy honey and cheese recipes that don't need the oven try the Honey Pecan Cream Cheese or the Honey Walnut Cream Cheese 😉👌.
- Love recipes that use honey? Try the Honey Soy Pork Ribs, Honey Mustard Sausages or the Honey Glazed Pork Chops 😍👍.
🤓 Frequently Asked Questions
How do you eat a block of feta cheese?
Feta is a popular versatile cheese and there are many ways to eat it! Crumble it over salads, bake it, add it to quiches, tarts or a cheese platter.
Greek feta cheese is the best type to use for baking. It has a firm texture and holds together well. Danish feta is soft and more likely to melt.
No, feta cheese does not melt like mozzarella. Feta will soften but not fully melt when cooked. Where mozzarella becomes ooey and stringy when cooked feta cheese will soften but then become rubbery if it has been overcooked.
Feta cheese pairs well with fruits, nuts, chutney and spreads.

📖 Recipe
Baked Feta With Honey
Ingredients
- 200 grams/ 8 oz Greek feta cheese Note 1
- 1 tablespoon olive oil Note 2
- 2 tablespoons honey
To serve
- thyme sprinkled over the top
- toasted pita bread toasted and warm
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: preheat the oven to 180°C / 350-375°F / Gas Mark 4-5.
- Feta cheese: remove the feta from the packet and use a folded piece of paper towel and chopping board to pat it dry. Note 3
- Olive oil: pour the olive oil over the top of the feta and use a basting brush or back of a spoon to spread it to cover the surface.
- Bake: place the baking dish into the oven on the middle shelf and bake the feta for 8-10 minutes. Then use oven mitts to remove it and place it onto a heatproof surface.
- Grill/broil: change the oven setting to grill/broil at 200°C 392°F6. Move the oven rack up to the top bracket.
- Honey: pour the honey over the top of the cheese and again use either a basting brush or back of a spoon to spread over the surface. Return the baking dish to the oven and grill (broil) the feta for 5-6 minutes until golden and caramelised.
- To serve: use oven mitts to remove the baked feta from the oven and place it onto a heatproof surface. Then slide a silicon turner underneath the feta and transfer it to a serving plate. Sprinkle thyme sprigs over the top of the feta, pop some toasted pita bread around it and provide a cheese knife.
Notes
- Note 1 - Feta cheese: I use and recommend you use Greek style feta cheese for the recipe. It has a firm texture and is not as soft and creamy as Danish feta. Most blocks will be sold as a 180 -200 gram size which is the 7 oz mark.
- Note 2 - Olive oil: don't worry if the oil goes down the sides of the cheese when pouring it over. We are not actively brushing the sides but if they get wet, that is fine! Plus we are not serving the feta in this dish, we are simply using it ti bake the feta.
- Note 3 - Patting dry: this step is optional. If the feta is very wet do this, if it is not, simply pop it into the baking dish and start the oil step.
