Ingredients

  • 4 slices white sourdough Note 1
  • 2 tablespoon butter Note 2
  • 1 tablespoon djion mustard Note 3
  • 4 slices swiss cheese cut in halves, so you will have 8 pieces, Note 4
  • 4 slices ham Note 5
  • 1 tablespoon horseradish cream Note 6

Garnish (optional):

  • chives finely chopped

Instructions

  • Butter bread: lay the 4 slices of sourdough bread onto a chopping board in a flat layer. Then use a butter knife to butter 1 side of each bread slice. Next stack the buttered sides together for each 2 pieces of bread.
  • Mustard: spread a thin layer of mustard onto 1 slice of bread for each sandwich.
  • Swiss cheese: place 2 cut slices of the swiss cheese on top of the mustard for each sandwich.
  • Ham: next place 2 folded slices of the ham on top of the swiss cheese per sandwich.
  • Horseradish cream: dollop the horseradish cream on top of the ham and use the back of a teaspoon to spread it into a thin layer.
  • More swiss: now take the 4 remaining slices of swiss cheese and layer this on top of the horseradish, using 2 pieces per toastie.
  • Close: unstick each of the buttered sides of bread for the sandwiches and place the top buttered side facing out.
  • Cook: place a large frying pan onto the stove top, turn the heat to high and add the toasties. Cook them for 3-4 minutes on the 1st side, then use a flat turner to flip them to the other side. Cook the 2nd side for 3-4 minutes.
  • To serve: once the toasties are cooked, use the flat turner to transfer them to a chopping board. Then use a serrated knife to cut them in halves. Sprinkle with chopped chives and plate.

Notes

  • Note 1 - Bread: the bread I usually turn to and that which you see in the photos throughout the post white sourdough. Even after being frozen I find that it holds its shape and texture well.
  • Note 2 - Butter: soft, spreadable butter will work the best.
  • Note 3 - Dijon mustard: is it even ham if we are not having mustard with it 😂. But so true right! As the horseradish has a strong flavor, I recommend using mild dijon mustard which is a lot more tame than hot English mustard.
  • Note 4 - Swiss cheese: this is an excellent cheese to use for grilled cheese sandwiches. The way it melts is like butter in your mouth! Soft, yet with a flavor that holds its own. We use 2 slices per sandwich, cut in halves.
  • Note 5 - Ham: up to you what type of ham you use. There is a lot on offer from honey baked ham to leftover leg ham, smoked ham or deli ham. We need 2 slices per sandwich.
  • Note 6 - Horseradish cream: this is a condiment that you will find with the sauces and mustard in the supermarket. It has a strong (delicious) and unique taste. Omit if making these for kids (it will be too strong).
