Equipment

  • 1 Chopping board
  • 1 Sharp Knife
  • 1 Small bowl
  • 1 Mini whisk
  • 1 Pastry Brush
  • 1 Flat Baking Tray
  • 1 Silicon Baking Mat

Ingredients

  • 5 sheets puff pastry Note 1
  • 10 beef sausages Note 2
  • 1 egg whisked
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds Note 3

Instructions

  • Oven: preheat your oven to 180°C / 350-375°F / Gas Mark 4-5.
  • Puff Pastry: remove frozen puff pastry sheets from the freezer and allow to thaw. Note 4
  • Sausages: working one by one hold the sausage in one hand and use a sharp knife to remove the casing of each sausage. Discard Note 5
  • Roll: place thawed puff pastry sheet onto chopping board. Lay sausage at one edge of the pastry and roll to cover. Use a pastry brush dipped in whisked egg to seal the overlap of the pastry.
  • Cut into mini sausage rolls: use a sharp knife to remove each empty end and cut the long sausage roll into 5 mini ones. Repeat for all sausages. Note 6
  • Oven bake: place cocktail sausage rolls onto baking mat. Transfer to the middle rack of the oven. Bake for 25 to 30 mins. Then remove and allow to cool slightly.
  • Serve: provide tomato or barbecue sauce for serving.

Notes

  • Note 1 We use store bought frozen puff pastry sheets and thaw them. This saves time, is an economical choice and delivers results.
  • Note 2 Depending on the occasion you may want to get basic sausages or premium ones. For a kid's party, you can go wrong with standard beef sausages. We use a sharp knife to remove the casing and then simply wrap the sausage in the thawed puff pastry.
  • Note 3 As a substitute you can use poppy seeds if you prefer.
  • Note 4 You can remove the pastry from the freezer and place it in the fridge overnight prior to cooking to allow it to be ready when you come to make the recipe.
  • Note 5 You will find the easiest way to remove the sausage casing is to use the tip of the knife to find one end, slide it under, then move the knife along the length of the sausage to cut the casing. Then simply pull it off and discard.
  • Note 6 It will be easier to keep the sausage rolls uniform if you place the sausage in the middle of the pastry and roll to cover. When cutting, simply discard each (empty) end.
