    Recipe Highlights

Here are some of the reasons why I think you will love this recipe and want to make it over and over again:

    • No kneading necessary, the recipe uses store bought puff pastry
    • Cheaper brand alternative spread is fine to use saving money!
    • Quick, easy and delicious
    • A unique dessert that tastes amazing and delivers visual delight
    • Crispy, crunchy, flaky pastry
    • Versatile options with ingredient combination be they pinwheels, scrolls, Danish, hearts, triangles, puffs, croissants, cups or simply dessert
    • Whip up a quick sweet treat, dessert or party food with minimal effort
    • Visually pleasing and delightful pairing of ingredients

    Ingredients

The ingredients needed for the recipe are shown in the photo below. For exact measurements and instructions, please refer to the printable recipe card.

Ingredients for Nutella Puff Pastry on marble background with text over lay
    Ingredients needed for the recipe
    • Puff Pastry: Store bought, any brand will do. This is an asset to your kitchen and every home chef should have some in the freezer (making life easy) at all times!
    • Nutella: This smooth and irresistible spread is made predominately from hazelnuts. You will find the 'same' ingredient known but another name such as 'hazelnut spread' or 'chocolate spread'. It is totally fine to use an (often cheaper) alternative.
    • Icing Sugar: This is also knowns as confectioners sugar. It is a powered non granulated sugar that works in baking. The perfect, easy no hassle decorating ideas also come from this as you can simply sift the sugar over anything and it will look amazing.
    • Pistachios: These are my preference as they also add colour to the recipe. You could also try granulated nuts and or hazelnuts. We only need a small amount of these and they don't get cooked (although you could toast if you wish). We crumble them and sprinkle over the icing sugar.

Top Tip 1: It is best to sift the icing sugar as otherwise it can be a little bit lumpy and inconsistent.

    Instructions

Here are the steps we make to make Nutella puff pastry come to yum life:

Step by step instructions 1 to 4 with text over lay
Step by Step Instructions 1 to 4
    • Remove pastry from freezer and allow to thaw (Photo 1)
    • Spread a layer of Nutella onto thawed pastry (Photo 2)
    • Roll tightly and wrap in cling wrap/glad wrap (Photo 3)
    • Remove rolled pastry and chop into portions (Photo 4)

You will find that the pastry roll is easier to roll once it comes out of the freezer as it has firmed up a little.

Top Tip 2: As much as it sounds delicious, try not to spread the Nutella all of the way to the edges of the pastry. We don't want it to ooze out.

Method for Nutella Puff Pastry with text over lay
Step by Step Instructions 5 to 8
    • Place individual scrolls on silicon baking mat (Photo 5)
    • Crush the nuts into pieces (Photo 6)
    • Bake the pin wheels for 15 - 20 mins (Photo 7)
    • Allow the pastries to cool on a baking rack (Photo 8)

If any of the pastries open up a little, simply squish them back together when placing on the baking tray/mat.

Use the back of a spoon and a sealed zip lock bag to crush the nuts into pieces.

Top Tip 3: The pastries will firm up as they cook, so don't be alarmed if when seemingly cooked they fee soft to the finger tip press test.

As you can see from the photo above, I simply dust with icing sugar and the crushed pistachios. This makes them look a little but more fancy!

    Puff Pastry Nutella Ideas

There is no doubt the pairing of these 2 simple ingredients delivers deliciousness.

There is little cap on the endless possibilities you can create as well.

These might be known by some as pinwheels, scrolls, puffs, desert, a pastry Danish, baked yum or simply heaven.

Either name used, identities that frozen puff pastry, Nutella, chocolate spread and some baking time in the kitchen creates love, love and more yummy love!

    Serving Suggestions

These pastries go down a treat with the simple dust of icing sugar and the crushed pistachios or hazelnuts. That being said you might be catering to a crowd and want a few diverse ideas up your sleeve. Try serving:

    • With tea or coffee
    • Alongside small glasses of port
    • Fresh from the oven with some cold vanilla ice cream on the side
    • With additional Nutella and nuts to be sprinkled over them

    How to Guide

    How to Store

Nutella Pinwheels/scrolls/puffs/Danishes should be stored in a sealed, air tight container.

In warmer climates it is advisable to refrigerate cooked pastries that have Nutella in the filling.

    How to Freeze

Allow the pastries to cool before storing in a sealed air tight container.

They can be frozen for up to 1 month.

    How to reheat

You can use either the oven or the Air Fryer to reheat the pinwheels.

Simply heat till warmed through from the centre out.

It is not advisable to reheat with the microwave as the pastry will not get crispy/flaky again.

    😉 Substitutions and Variations

Whilst we are all about the sweet so far, a savoury option is my Cheese and Tomato Pinwheels. If preparing for a party, it won't hurt to have a combination of both to please the crowd. You can also try:

    • Using a sprinkle of granulated nuts
    • Dust with cocoa powder instead of icing sugar
    • Substitute chopped hazelnuts for the pistachios
    • Instead of scrolls/pinwheels make the shape of a Christmas tree with the 2 layers of pastry and have a Nutella layer in between for festive fun!
    • Whip these out in December for a special time of year treat!

    🛎 Tasty Tips

These are my top tips and tricks for you to know to master the recipe from the start and each further time you make the deliciousness:

    • Ensure the oven is preheated.
    • Allow frozen puff pastry to fully thaw prior to using.
    • Work with an imaginary boundary in mind when spreading the chocolate so that it doesn't ooze out when chopping the scrolls.
    • Try and pull the pastry towards you and down when rolling so the roll is tight.
    • Do crush the nuts as they will look prettier than using whole, uncrushed nuts.
    • Use a small sifter when dusting with icing sugar to remove any lumps or bumps.
    • Double the recipe to make more pinwheels and feed a crowd.

    🤓 Frequently Asked Questions

What is puff pastry used for?

Puff pastry can be used for both sweet and savory cooking.

Uses include as a pizza base, tart base, pie topper, dessert and appetizer.

Is puff pastry the same as croissant?

Puff Pastry and Croissants are similar as they are both flaky, pastry that come from dough.

You can find vegan versions of puff pastry readily available at the store, most noticeably as it does not contain milk the way croissant dough does.

Nutella can be used as a spread for toast, filling for pastry, stirred through cakes and various other baking.

It is also commonly sold in small packets perfect for lunch boxes as the portion size is small and it comes with a little serving utensil.

What can I eat Nutella with?

It is best to store Nutella at room temperature, not in the fridge.

This will ensure it doesn't solidify and firm up too much to be easily spread.

    Equipment

    • 1 Silicon Mat (Parchment Paper)
    • 1 Sharp Knife
    • 1 Chopping board

    Ingredients

    • 2 sheets Frozen Puff Pastry thawed, Note 1
    • ½ cup Nutella Note 2
    • ¼ cup Pistachio Nuts crushed into pieces, Note 3
    • 1 tbs Icing Sugar sifted, Note 4

    Instructions

    • Preheat your oven to 180°C / 350-375°F / Gas Mark 4-5.
    • Remove frozen puff pastry from the freezer and set on the bench to thaw.
    • Working one by one, place thawed puff pastry sheet onto a chopping board and use a butter knife to spread a layer of the Nutella. Note 4, 5
    • Starting at one edge, roll the pastry sheet tightly. Wrap in cling wrap and freeze for 30 mins. Note 6
    • Remove pastry from the freezer, place on chopping board and use a sharp knife to cut into portions.
    • Transfer the cut pinwheels to the silicon baking mat (or parchment paper). Place the tray into the oven and allow the scrolls to bake for 15 - 20 mins.
    • When the timer is up, check that the pastries are done, then turn the oven off, but leave the tray in so that the scrolls can start to cool.
    • After 5 mins, use an oven mit and remove tray from the oven. Use a flat flexible turner and lift the Nutella puff pastry pinwheels onto a cooking rack.
    • Sprinkle with sifted icing sugar and crushed pistachios.

    Notes

    • Note 1 Store bought frozen puff pastry squares are recommended. They will be readily available at your local supermarket in the freezer section.
    • Note 2 Or alternative name chocolate spread/hazelnut spread.
    • Note 3 You can also use granulated nuts or crushed hazelnuts.
    • Note 4 Also known as confectioner's sugar. I recommend sifting this to remove and lumps or bumps. You can use cocoa powder if you prefer.
    • Note 4 Using a butter knife will ensure that you don't accidently poke holes in the pastry as the edge is blunt.
    • Note 5 Keep an imaginary slight boundary so that the Nutella stays within the pastry, not right to the edges. This will ensure it doesn't ooze out too much.
    • Note 6 This is not an essential step. If you are in a hurry, you can skip it. It is, however, useful to ensure tight mini scrolls and a neater result.
